I've been re-reading books I first read decades ago. I'm currently slogging through David Halberstam's "The Powers That Be," the first serious book I ever read. I recall Halberstam, who died in 2007, described as a great writer. He did, after all, win a Pulitzer, but that was for reporting, not writing. Powers That Be is more than 700 pages, but would have been better at 500. Hence, the value of a good editor, the most under-valued position in publishing. Length doesn't have to be a slog. I
