The society we have now produces the worst in everyone. This man is not a conservative. He is not conserving anything. He is not recognizing even the obligations he has freely entered into. To be conservative is to believe in more than oneself and ones desires. It is to believe that the world is ordered with virtues, dignity, obligations…

To be conservative is to believe in more than oneself and ones desires. It is to believe that the world is ordered with virtues, dignity, obligations, honors, customs, laws and love. Here he is telling his wife to serve him while she's eight months pregnant. You are absolutely right that, that is not loving, thoughtful, compassionate or honorable. It's pure self obsession, it's conceit.
Society has spent countless years convincing everyone that individual self happiness is all that matters. This idea is not a traditional conservative idea. It is definitely not a Christian or Jewish idea. It is in fact the most extreme version of liberalism, of self autonomy. Where liberalism finds its end and goes to a MAID clinic to commit suicide. To truly love oneself we must have love for others that exceeds our own self love. Only in giving freely, compassionately to those we love more than ourselves do we discover what true love is. An obsessive focus on oneself is isolatory and ultimately harmful to ourselves as well as others to which we have sworn obligations and oaths too. To only concern yourself, with yourself ultimately ends in isolation. Most people observed in isolation end up going crazy and falling into despair. Therefore it absolutely true that to love oneself you first must love someone else more than yourself.

Instructions for Christian Households
21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[c] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
This mans actions are the result of emptiness and have led to emptiness and therefore cannot possibly conserve anything.
Autonomy is our divine right. Free will, remember? Christianity, in most of the forms it exists or is practiced currently, teaches us to love ourselves not at all, to be automatons and puppets to a frat-boy God whose mercurial punishments and blessings strangely align with the interests of the rich and those interested in the pursuit of power.
I'll take my individual sovereignty any day, thanks.
Your entitled to live the life you desire. You can blame God and others for the resulting unhappiness that you end up with but your only deluding yourself. Free will remember? I don't know what religions you've actually participated in but nothing Jesus taught was 'frat-boy'. I think you don't actually participate in a religion and get your opinion of it from a cereal box.
I was raised fundie Xtian and am well steeped in the lore. Wasn't referring to Jesus (who is just alright with me) but the punitive, callous OT god who has been used to justify everything from slavery to the oppression of women.
Love your assumption that if we choose our own path/exercise our free will it will end up in misery. The less orthodox religion I've consumed, the happier I've been. LOL!
Your comment was full of assumptions and built a strawman that had nothing to do with my comment. Furthermore fundamentalist's Christianity is hardly representative of the whole or history more broadly.
