2. Worse than the crime, invading Gaza will not work (if you define success as eradicating Hamas) as opposed to satisfying the understandable urge to strike back against the perps). Dubya after 9/11 showed great statesmanship by first, being careful not to vilify all Muslims but also, by using rapiers not blunderbusses: he sent the CIA into Afghanistan -even on horses! - instead of B52s, and overthrew the taliban within 3 months. It’s one of the greatest unsung triumphs of American action, but unfortunately OBL escaped (helped by the perfidious Pakistani secret service) until Obama got him (in another unsung American triumph). What’s the lesson here? Israel needs to play smart, not tough;

3. October 7 didn’t come out of nowhere. Yes, it was a massive intelligence failure but it was worse than that. Netanyahu corrupted Israeli society in his hubris and his frantic efforts to stay out of jail - he and his far-right allies were as responsible for what happened as Hamas was, and the only path to threading towards a lasting and just peace is for Israel to box smart against Hamas and its apologists BUT ALSO to confront the right-wing settlers. No one seems to want to do so. Killing one side, even with rapiers but air bombs, is only half the story. This is why I’m pessimistic. Sadly...
