Perhaps one should tell Nicole that writing the way one speaks isn't the best way to communicate. "Like, y'all."

Sorry, I know I'm being a dick but I don't find this cute or endearing.

Just depressing.

Bruce, you're not being a dick. I cringe when people use the "y'all" and when they repeatedly use it it's really annoying. But then, maybe I'M being a dick....

Y'all are both dicks. Nicole is from/lives somewhere in the deep South. Y'all is a contraction of "you all", and a substitute for you (plural). Even the most highly educated and sophisticated Southerners use this regularly in their verbal communication. If you live there you don't notice it and it is endearing. If you don't live there or have been away a long time, it sounds contrived, but it's not.

When you go to a restaurant or the grocery store or about anywhere else and pay your bill, you will hear "Y'all have a nice day." And they mean it. So while you disparage her honest act of expressing herself as if she were talking directly to you, I would bet Nicole is a sweet Southern Belle like Scarlet in Gone with the Wind. She could probably make both of you melt by batting her eyes.

Well, bless your heart Jim - Thanks for the lesson in Southern colloquialisms. Most of us know what a contraction is and y'all isn't just used in the South - you'll hear it a lot in inner cities too and for many of us NOT in the South it's strongly correlated to folks with lower education....

"Educated and "Sophisticated" people

out on the West Coast and North certainly wouldn't use it because they've associated it with being "unsophisticated"

Have a nice night
