To me, the author really nails it with this comment that I haven't seen anyone else mention in the many articles that I have read in the last week:

"We kept electing commanders-in-chief who had never served, who had credentials but had never built anything, whose success resided atop the more substantive success of more serious people."

How can we justify having a commander in chief who has never experienced combat? Why would you allow someone who has never experienced its horrors and its lessons to send someone else's child halfway across the world to a Godforsaken land to fight? I think that service in the armed forces should be a bona fide requirement to run for president.

However, I just can't agree that America is toast. I live in a fly over state that the elites sneer at, and I know amazing, wonderful people. I have the best friends. Don't let the mistakes by elected officials make you cynical. Raise your children to be different. Love your neighbor. Volunteer in your community.

I can't say that I completely understand what you are going through, but I have dipped my toes in it. Ten days ago I dropped my son, a freshman in college & a STEM major, off at a mostly STEM school in a different flyover state and he's already come face to face with what you are describing. It wasn't as aggressive as what you mention, but very persistent and he was quite surprised. No, your daughter shouldn't drive a truck or come home and work at Applebee's. From this comment and the others I think that you are telling her the right things. And no, she doesn't deserve this. Also, I have heard that marching bands literally everywhere are bastions of what you perfectly describe as "toxic hysterical tribalism."

I guess she tells them, ok go fuck yourself. Why would she want to continue to be friends with people who are so judgmental and totalitarian. Next they’ll say if you like this kind of music, I won’t be friends with you. The world does not only exist in college. Find outlets in the wider community.

If she’s in STEM and sticks with it and shines, she will be fine.

You're doing right, Mr. Airily Reeks. But one thing You might note: These folks she's worried about. Quickest Way I can see that she can find out who the "keepers" are. From what little You've said, the rest aren't worth the time of day.

Sure, they SEEMED like friends at one time. It'd be a difficult time for her, no doubt. But if she's of a mind sometime, try to get her to thank her lucky STARS that she finds out who her REAL friends are and who are her enemies NOW, rather than later.

Pretty lame, I s'pose, on my part.

I appreciate and agree with just about everything you say, but where you lose me is over masks and vaccination, which are so obviously necessary to anybody with scientific understanding. These have become a weird bone of the "culture war", costing tens of thousands of lives. I very much hope your daughter navigates her way through these treacherous waters and succeeds in life.
