Over the last six months, we’ve run two essay contests in The Free Press. The first was for high schoolers; we asked them to write about a problem facing American society—and how to fix it. The second contest was for an older generation—70 years and over—and we asked them to tell a story about an event that shaped their life and helped give them wisdom or a fresh perspective.
Astonishing difference. Fresh Young hypothesis on life and tired moralistic views on life. Great idea to put these two contest together. Illuminating contrast.
Wow, Ruby LaRocca is an impressive young person. I found myself wanting to know more about the old books that she recommends. Please put out a reading list for us! I would love to share with my kids.
Dear Bari, The Free Press needs to acknowledge the submissions to this contest. At a minimum you need to send an email to each one thanking them for their submission.
Thank you. I lost my father to Alzheimers. I have a friend who is struggling with this now, I will pass it on. Have a blessed day.
This was wonderful. Thoughtful, touching essays. Excellent work and performances by both writers. Thank you, FP, and Merry Christmas to all.
