You could have asked any private in the army, after their first deployment there, if this is exactly how things would have ended - no matter how long we were there making the place safer for the ladies - and they’d have said, “duh!” But, ask some senior military official, or that other type of idiot from some Washington think tank, and they’d have said, “just need more time and I promise that Afghanistan will be the very beacon of democracy.” This was 100% predictable and inevitable. Get over it, hope the best for your Afghan friends that are still there. But this country, America, is super fucked up right now and needs our attention. We can’t want democracy for Afghanistan more than Afghans themselves cares bout Democracy. That’s not a plan for success - it’s a plan for exactly what you’re seeing meow - a cluster f*ck of American hubris.
