I'm becoming more and more convinced these days that libertarianism is an evolutionary dead end. I'm giving up on it and becoming - to my horror - a religious conservative.
Any doubts I have in the existence of God are outweighed by the certainty that even people with the wisest, most freedom-loving philosophical inclinations are fuck useless in the fight against tyranny unless they believe in an objective, divinely-ordained morality.
I am shocked at Sally Satel making this argument. It is the same argument a totalitarian state makes about literally anything. Those of us who care about freedom are even lonelier than we realized.
A libertarian who can be swayed by appeal to the "collective" or "common good" is worse than useless. What's even the point of your politics, then?
