Consider also When Everything You Wanted Isn't Enough, by the late Rabbi Harold Kushner. It's an extended thought on Ecclesiastes/Qohelet. Of course, Kushner was also author of the very famous When Bad Things Happen to Good People.

I pondered long on Ecclesiastes helped along by David GibsonтАЩs Living Life Backwards. Loaned my copy to a friend - but feel the need to re-read.
