This is such a great place to get the actual news! Thanks Suzy! I don't think because I have a child I care more about the future than I would if I didn't. There are plenty of ppl who are childless who have made major contributions to society as you pointed out. Re: having a drink or bottle of wine with Kamala, I just don't feel it. She is inauthentic to me. Her personality and viewpoints change depending on her audience. I'd rather hang out with my dogs (I don't have cats.) sabrinalabow.substack.com
Peter Savodnik doesn't sound like a journo I'd want to have a drink with. If he can't think of anything interesting to ask Kamala Harris, if he hasn't paid attention to the last four years in which she's been badly treated by the media and disappointed us all with her District Attorney Glare resembling a Victorian lady's downcast gaze, then he either has no imagination or no curiosity or he's just too partisan to bother with. I'd ask her point-blank if she's going to stay 'woke' or appeal to all the lost politically homeless waiting (still) for the Democratic party to put up something than their own idiot version of authoritarianism, which doesn't look all that different from the other side's, to be brutally honest.
I'd ask her if she's going to unleash her buried District Attorney glare on Trump in the debates including the glare I thought once could melt steel, but which she hid for the Republicans. I'd ask her whether she's as personally obsessed with her multi-identities as her fanboys and girls and whether she doesn't secretly want to just say fuck it and be herself, whether others like it or not. And if you want to know about her policies, why wait to ask, shy little Savodnikmouse? Why not point-blank *ask her*? That's your job as a journo, isn't it?
Thanks for a great recap! Regarding the Olympic boxing story, the solution to this dilemma isn't that difficult. In a slightly tongue-in-cheek explanation of how ideologues tend to exploit the ambiguities in biology, I would suggest this: https://everythingisbiology.substack.com/p/what-is-a-woman-boxer
"Tim and Gwen Walz do not own a single stock, bond, security, cryptocurrency—you name it. They don’t even have real estate, since they sold their house to move into the governor’s mansion. Shockingly, and refreshingly, the couple’s only investments are through state pensions."
Refreshingly? WTH does that mean? State pensions where the taxpayers take care of those who won't take of themselves in retirement is refreshing? To whom? And we're not talking about the dogcatcher here. This is the friggen Governor.
But even worse is the thought that we could have a POTUS who is a financial illiterate. But I do wonder about that statement's accuracy. What did they do with the proceeds of their house sale? Bury it in the backyard of the governor's mansion? Stuff the cash in a mattress?
State pensions are for state employees, just like corporate pensions are for corporate employees. My cousin worked for Shell Oil for 40 years and is now retired on a combination of Social Security and his Shell pension. My mother worked for a state-run hospital for 30 years and retired on a combination of Social Security, my dad’s Navy pension and her state pension. Where in the world do you get the idea that a state pension is taxpayers taking care of people who don’t take care of themselves? You do realize that all your favorite GOP Senators and Representatives are going to receive government pensions when they retire from Congress? Right? Fwiw, I’ve read that the Walz’s have a net worth around $300,000, so if they don’t have any assets other than their pensions, I assume the $300k is the proceeds from selling the house. And they also have a college savings account for their two kids (one in college now, the other still in high school). And don’t forget that Walz (and I think his wife too) was a public school teacher, so that must be the state pension. Are you saying that public school teachers shouldn’t get pensions from their jobs? Are you willing to tell them that? And it’s quite possible that the $300k is in some sort of bank account. I’m not a fan of Walz, but he’s going to come across to voters as Mr. Average Man. Vance is going to be Mr Billionaire Tech Bro. It will be interesting to see how the voters react.
Yes, I am definitely saying that public school teachers and administrators should not get any special benefits from the taxpayers. Their salaries are above average and they only work 200 days a year.
As far as the private sector goes, they can do what they want with their assets. But I can tell you that pensions in the private sector today are very rare.
I didn’t get a pension from my law firm, nor did my husband, but they provided each of us with a 401k plan. State employees deserve at least that. Very few jobs provide nothing at all. And for my H and I, we also got matching funds for our contributions, up to a certain amount, plus other benefits. The fact that it’s hard to get people to take government jobs because the private sector pays better (in almost every single type job, definitely law jobs that I’m familiar with) is only helped by the benefits packages. If you don’t want to have any teachers at all, then yeah, take their pensions away. I just hope you don’t have any kids.
You do realize that public school teachers salaries are paid by taxpayers? Including taxpayers who don’t have children, or have their own children in private schools? Should my mother , who worked in state hospital’s cardiology dept doing heart catherization procedures, she didn’t deserve a state pension? My dad (and my uncle and my cousins), all in the Navy and the Marines, they didn’t deserve a government pension? The Congressmen and the Senators don’t deserve their government pensions? Federal employees?
Don’t ever run for public office if you believe this completely unrealistic proposition.
Kamala Harris had better start taking herself seriously if she is serious about running for President. I don't think I would like to have a drink with her she seems like a narcissist.
Walz is literally a socialist member of the DFL, which means the DNC not only supports socialism but now wants one for VP. That really isn’t “refreshing” and if you think he doesn’t know how to hide assets you’ve never heard of the Panama Papers, Swiss banks, the Caymans or Lichtenstein. What will not happen is surveillance of his campaign, right? As for Kamala when is someone going to ask her why she’s not the president right now? In fact why isn’t TheFP asking? Finally, seriously, how much time was put into inventing gay sailor angles? That’s just bizarre when arguing that cat ladies have always been in the same category as George Washington.
If Harris can, “laugh things off and not take herself too seriously”, why do so many around her quit? Why was her 2020 campaign such a disaster that she never got to the primaries or even into 2020? From what I’ve read over the years, her management style appears to be one of micro-managing people and making sure she gets credit for the wins and the failures don’t stick to her. And, the reports about her temper and tirades would indicate that she takes all of this incredibly seriously.
TFP seems set assisting Dems efforts to slander Vance while patronizing single or nulliparous women . You just keep repeating the same shit plus anything the opp research team wants to try out to divert discussion away from substantive discussion of governance under Trump vs Harris
He didn’t need to save & watch his investments. He has his nice government pension. And many come with a regular cost of living raise.
Now It’s true. Folks who’ve retired from Congress have it even better; they have their gold plated medical plan, which they set up after exempting themselves from Obamacare. And better yet, if they do care to invest, they have access to lotsa insider information. Actually, a lot of government service positions can be very lucrative. Just ask Fauci.
Yeah, what celebration of human excellence would be complete without cool names to make the spectacle interesting those who need cool names and who maybe don't concern themselves with excellence.
The problem with the Olympics is the lack of cool names - really?
And yes, adults not only watch the Olympics, but go completely nuts when extraordinary achievements are on displays. I am a bit sad for you that you do not.
Why do people consistently consider Shapiro a moderate? Other than having taken a stand for Israel (and reneged to try not get the VP position), he is a democrat on all its positions.
Maybe he is a moderate in comparison to some of the extreme antisemitic democrats, or moderate because he does not support complete socialism. Nasty Amy Kloubuchar, the MN senator has always portrayed herself as ‘bipartisan’ or moderate, but has an 100% voting record.
No. Shapiro is just a democrat who stuck out his neck on Israel and then pulled it back.
Unfortunately ability and charisma do not trump jewish for democrats.
I love the FP’s iconoclast presentation. However some of its writers are exquisitely tuned into the poor fashion choices of liberals and oblivious of the total lack of clothing of little Donny T, psychologically arrested at age 13.

Corey Bush is like the rest of the infants occupying her former district. Be gone and don't come back.

Kamala does take herself seriously

It's no tribute to them. Depending on an endless series of government jobs
and pensions which are indexed to inflation.
State pensions are for state employees, just like corporate pensions are for corporate employees. Lots of deserving in your posts. Seems you have that privileged disease. Common these days.
I'm just not buying the Bulwark story. That is weak journalism that surprises me FP would reference.

Walz is an idiot… no investments?!? Sounds like he should move to Venezuela… communist dirt bag!
What? You didn't find that to be "refreshing"?
