Thanks, Peter for this exceptional piece. The white noise from the Griner camp is insufferable. You didn't mention, however, that the nadir of the stomach-wrenching irony is that Griner is often and frequently quoted as deriding America (in general). Once she flew to Russia to get paid, and brought drugs with her, her tune changed. Now we will trade an avowed American killer to fluff up the midterms. I suppose the Citgo execs in Venezuela - having committed no crime - aren't the right color to deserve such personal attention. But given that this Sec of State has made clear that service in the State Dept. will now be linked to skin color, I can't say my dismay is a surprise. I hope this gets pushed to other outlets. I don't know if many Americans are aware that someone who celebrated killing their sons and daughters is being given his freedom in order to free someone who - I might add - flew to Russia to get paid AFTER they invaded Ukraine and starting zip tying people and executing them.
The names of the Citgo executives indicate that many are Hispanic. Perhaps this has to do with what is done for cele-BRAT-tees and Griner misread the privileges of her status and Russia's mood.
If she had made trips to Russia before, had she previously packed a little bit of dope and got away with it?
The guilty of shop lifting UCLA basketball players in China and A$AP who was guilty of assault in Sweden were all gotten off by a president (the one before Biden) because of their celebrity status. What makes the Griner case significant and appalling is that the government is actually thinking of wasting the wisdom, time, and cost of a trial, court decision, imprisonment in a move that could further endanger American lives.
Put your finger on the fact that they were all male entertainers (throwing athletes into this group) and have more status, money, power, and protection and compare it to Brittney Griner. It is not only pay that separates male and female athletes/entertainers.
Respectfully, I think you are missing the point. The cases you cite involve no prisoner exchange. The knucklehead(s) in Sweden, China etc were freed by cigar chomping handshakes. Griner’s supporters are demanding we release a notorious weapons dealer, nicknamed the Lord of Death, who boasted that the weapons he sold were best used to kill Americans. If we got Griner for a back massage Id be fine with it. Shes an American and we should help, no matter I find her lacking in character, compassion and grit. But releasing an American killer into Russia’s hands. Especially NOW…for someone who willingly committed a crime (she didnt sneak in a bottle of Jack into a Muslim country, she had dope) so she could get paid by a Russian oligarch, its just too much to stomach.
"service in the State Dept. will now be linked to skin color"
Is this really all that surprising under the current maladministration, where melanin and gonads are now the only requirements for a lifetime appointment to SCOTUS?
You seem to be implying that she should get less help from the government because she has been critical of the United States. That is dangerous territory.
Good point, bcasey004. But I do believe that her ideas and behavior are more important than her color, sexual orientation, etc. Getting more help from the govt on this basis is even more dangerous territory.
I would say she has shown open contempt and hatred of America and not just being "critical". So from a value standpoint, I question the logic of trading someone that is a known arms dealer and has willfully killed Americans with someone that is highly privileged simply hates America and all the success it has brought her.
What has she said to express "open contempt and hatred?"
I would like to read some of her comments.
Btw, America "brought" nothing to Griner. The ethos/culture of America is "Every person" for themselves" "Equal opportunity, not equal results"
If you're poor - it's your fault because you're lazy - cause the system is perfect. In America, you are completely on your own. Sink or swim. ALL on you.
Was AMERICA out there on the court when she was practicing? Was AMERICA in the weight room when she was working out? She brought herself success. "America" had nothing to do with it.
It's so funny....we tell everyone "You're on your own" "Equal opportunity, not equal results" "Sink or Swim"....yet, when they become successful....we demand they give credit to "AMERICA"....for what?
Griner owes America NOTHING - she did the work herself. Tom Brady owes America NOTHING - he read the play book, he watched the hours of game film, he lifted the weights, he did the work, he practiced for hundreds of hours - not "America" - HE did it.
That's why HE will be inducted first-ballot Hall of Fame....and "America" will not be inducted. Brady brought HIS success...."America" had nothing to do with it.
I picked Tom Brady because he's white, so maybe you can relate/appreciate.
Can't tell people "Good Luck! Sink or swim" - and then when they swim successfully, , you demand credit for "America"
Anyway, I digress, please share with me the "open contempt, hatred" etc. that Griner has shared.
Did they run defense for her when she was working low post drills?
Oh...no one gets wrongfully/maliciously incarcerated in America? LOL!! Hope that's not your stupid argument.
Nah, my parents, who grew up under Segregation/Jim Crow have "done things" for me....where was America, then?
The rest I did completely on my own - cause in America, it's every person for themselves.
America is nothing more than a geographical land mass where one can gather/extract as many personal resources as possible, just like the overwhelming majority of all the other land masses on the planet.
"Btw, America "brought" nothing to Griner. The ethos/culture of America is "Every person" for themselves" "Equal opportunity, not equal results"
I don't think you even begin to understand what the United States is about. The fact it allows people of quality, dedication, skill and determination to succeed is what America brought Griner.
"It's so funny....we tell everyone "You're on your own" "Equal opportunity, not equal results" "Sink or Swim"....yet, when they become successful....we demand they give credit to "AMERICA"....for what?"
For creating a system which allowed them to pursue what they wanted to do. You sound like a small child which wants everything given to them.
"Griner owes America NOTHING - she did the work herself. Tom Brady owes America NOTHING - he read the play book, he watched the hours of game film, he lifted the weights, he did the work, he practiced for hundreds of hours - not "America" - HE did it."
Then America owes her NOTHING in return and she should spend 9 years in prison for breaking a drug law in a foreign country.
"I picked Tom Brady because he's white, so maybe you can relate/appreciate."
Fascinating....the majority of the world lives in free, market, Democratic freedom, pal.
"America is sink or swim, you're on your own."
Those who swim owe "America" NOTHING!
THEY did it, not America.
And furthermore, one of the reasons Griner was even in Russia, is because she has to play there, like many WNBA players, because they don't make enough playing in America. So...so much for "America."
Astounding. I third grade understanding of history, politics and geopolitical situations with a complete lack of gratitude for the systems you live in.
I’m guessing you still want to live in the time of Lords, Monarchies and Serfdoms.
Why don't you look into how many other countries have free-market, Democratic systems and have had those from their inception?
LOL!!!! You don't think there were "Lords and Serfdoms" in America's history? And you critique others knowledge? Astounding. You're the one with 3rd grade knowledge.
Please report back to all of us. I'm sure we'd all like to know. Since you have such "deep" understanding of world history and geopolitics. Yes....please tell us how many countries on the planet have free-market, democratic systems, Steven.
Granted, WW2 was the best thing to ever happen to the U.S., so there is that. Easy to become dominant when there's no competition.
I have ZERO to be grateful for. America is "sink or swim/you're on your own." I did it, not America.
No. There are no US Lords and serfs in America’s history. Period. There is 0 room for debate on this.
Those free market ideas originated by the Dutch and grew from there. This is why the Gini Index of wealth inequality is highest in the Nordic countries.
The US was the first large scale implementation of Locke’s philosophies of the idea of individual and private property (VS Jean-Jacques Rousseau emphasis on the common ownership for the common good. You know the religious ideology at the root of Marxism and Equity. 10’s if not 100’s of millions slaughtered by that religion in the past 100 years).
There is little doubt when the free market is allowed to thrive, if lifts people out of abject poverty faster than any other system as 70% of the world’s population will attest to in the last 20 years alone.
You sound like a little child which thinks your hard work alone is yours and you have nothing to be grateful for for the amazing system your (or others if you immigrated to the US) ancestors put in place. Look to Sri Lanka or California to see how quickly it can crumble.
Is it? It's actually pretty normal to not give a damn when someone who hates their own country gets in trouble abroad for disrespecting another country's laws. The entire issue with Griner is that she does not respect authority, either here or abroad. She considers herself too "special" to be criticized for her behavior. There is no reason to put her ahead of every other American detained abroad.
Unilateral disarmament always results poorly for those who disarmed. I will always keep one hand open in welcome and the other hand clenched in a fist, so to speak. I prefer the former, but am willing to employ the latter.
At least she's not being arrested and called an "insurrectionist" for criticizing the American government. And now that you mention it, do you find being arrested and held in solitary confinement for the heinous crime of trespassing to be "dangerous territory?"
How many idiots went into the Capitol versus the numbers who protested? Do you know? Of course not. You just flap your gums and needlessly inject race into a discussion about 1/6 that didn't involve race, at all.
As you have pointed out, the important thing we ALL need to remember is that:
If white people protest and it turns violent: it is "complaining"
If nonwhite people protest and it turns violent: then 99% of all protest, by extension, were violent, every American city was burned to the ground and millions were killed.
Luckily, for America, Jan. 6th was the only time white people have ever rioted and engaged in violence in American history.
As far as how many went in, attacked police, destroyed property, shit on on the floor, etc.?

I do find it unfortunate, however, that they did not receive the same response as if bunch of "Not Born in America" blacks, or "Rapists and Murders" Mexicans or "Islamic Jihadist" Muslims had done the same thing.

Any trade has to do with value. I question whether there is value in trading someone who really actually did kill Americans, with someone who doesn't seem to like them so much. It doesn't feel like America is getting value for their trade. Also, she isn't wrongly detained. She transported drugs - doesn't matter how much - into Russia. Knowingly. Everyone knows you don't bring drugs anywhere, especially Russia and Asia. We all know what happens. She isn't charged with espionage. Admittedly her sentence is ludicrous, but she kind of reaped what she sowed. We should do everything to get her home - including the other wrongfully detained citizens who get zero press, or pressing of the proverbial high powered political flesh, but not to give away the whole store. “The white noise from the Griner camp is insufferable. “
Fuking racist white noise.
"White Noise": noise containing many frequencies with equal intensities.
How is that racist?.....many people use "white noise" to help sleep at night.
Can you explain/elaborate?
Joke maybe?
I'm starting to think they're Matt Mullin.
Absolutely not.
The names of the Citgo executives indicate that many are Hispanic. Perhaps this has to do with what is done for cele-BRAT-tees and Griner misread the privileges of her status and Russia's mood.

I'm sensing a theme with your examples....can't quite put my finger on it, though.
Put your finger on the fact that they were all male entertainers (throwing athletes into this group) and have more status, money, power, and protection and compare it to Brittney Griner. It is not only pay that separates male and female athletes/entertainers.
Interesting....so male privilege?
Put your finger on the fact that there is not the same in regard to race.....cause that would be impossible, right?

Really? They're hiring people in the State Dept. based on skin color?
Melanin and gonads....think the last "melanin" SC Justice was Clarence Thomas....
As far as "Melanin and Gonads" are you talking about Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Coney-Barret?
1.Really please share these frequent decisions of America.
2. Why was she in Russia?
3. What "drugs" did she have on her.
You seem to be implying that she should get less help from the government because she has been critical of the United States. That is dangerous territory.

Nah....quite a bit of room for "debate."
https://daily.jstor.org/how-american-slavery-echoed-russian-serfdom/
Yep. Landed gentry in the Confederate states doesn't count.
Let me explain to YOU what America is about:
1. The free-market system is perfect, so if you're poor it's your fault.
2. Everyone starts at the same place, and there is no such thing as "privilege."
3. Everyone has exactly the same equal, opportunities.
4. Sink and swim on your own - don't ask for shit.
Lol... weren't you the same people giving Obama hard time about "You Didn't Build That." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_didn%27t_build_that
Sorry, my ancestors didn't put this sytem in place, and they certainly didn't immigrate to the U.S.
Yep. Goddamn right I did this shit on my own. With the help of my parents who grew up inder Segregation /Jim Crow...where was "America" then?
Didn't see America taking my comps exams, etc.
You sould like a child, who thinks America is the only free country on Earth.
bc...oh, um, how about the Same Help? I look at it this way, at least she can Keep Her Electricity on, she'll be fine.
No, that part is karma.
Good. Then we call shut up now about Jan. 6th.
Can you please share evidence that Griner "Hates her own country" - I'm in a debate with a relative and I need backup.
We are already in that territory thanks to Merrick Garland. So play the game or get squashed.
I know that is cynical, but it is unavoidable at this time.
I agree. Trump should have the right to take classified material, just like all the other POTUS have done.
Go away Mr. Epps.
Who the hell is Mr. Epps? Are you talking about the actor?
"So play the game or get squashed."
No, there's a third option. It's the option that strong and free Americans have been playing since that April morning in 1775.
Yep. That's what happened on Jan. 6th. - it was "criticism."
Good. Glad you cleared thaf up. Now you can shut up about any violent protest by non white people.
How many idiots went into the Capitol versus the numbers who protested? Do you know? Of course not. You just flap your gums and needlessly inject race into a discussion about 1/6 that didn't involve race, at all.
Bruce,
As you have pointed out, the important thing we ALL need to remember is that:
If white people protest and it turns violent: it is "complaining"
If nonwhite people protest and it turns violent: then 99% of all protest, by extension, were violent, every American city was burned to the ground and millions were killed.
Luckily, for America, Jan. 6th was the only time white people have ever rioted and engaged in violence in American history.
As far as how many went in, attacked police, destroyed property, shit on on the floor, etc.?

More nonsense. The videos of the summer of love don't lie.
But you do.
It's not really nonsense, Bruce.
Jan 6th was "complaining"
Summer of Love( ???) destroyed America and every American city was burned to the ground.
Can we both agree on that?
You're pretty unclear and meandering for a prof. Hope you're better in your classes.
Exceptionally clear and straightforward.
YOU just have no response/retort to my unimpeachable description of American culture/ethos.
Nah...it's fine...especially the person ain't white, amitire?
bcasey004
You contend that an anti-American American who committed a crime in Russia should receive as much help as ordinary Americans who committed no crime or patriots who were serving America when wrongfully arrested. You are in dangerous territory.
Alex Jones has been critical of the United States too. If he were in a Russian prison, would you support releasing a dangerous terrorist to get him back home?
Definitely not Alex Jones is a dog I’m apologize Dogs are gorgeous animals Alex is the worst
She broke their law
Even in Holland, you would be arrested for bringing drugs into the country. There is literally no country in the world that permits one to import illicit substances.
I wouldn’t. Jones can do his lying in Russia.
It is more accurate to describe my position as wondering why she - unlike the other sixty-plus - wrongfully detained Americans abroad get no discernible personal efforts from the President and the Secretary of State. Any trade has to do with value. I question whether there is value in trading someone who really actually did kill Americans, with someone who doesn't seem to like them so much. She did it. She's guilty. Lastly, I could roll out a Torah length set of complaints about America and how it operates. Indeed - as a subscriber to this media service I'm willing to pay to hone my critique. However, there is a difference between those who critique something, and those who damn it - and then ask for the country's Crown Jewels, aka weapons dealers who gleefully killed Americans.
Another Bowe Bergdahal
Exactly! Bergdahal should have been left to rot in the hands of those Muslin fanatics. After he was brought back to the US, he should have been put up against a wall and shot as a deserter.
Six men from his unit were killed searching for him. He disgusts me.
Instead Obama feted him in the Rose Garden
The left treated Obama like he was the Messiah. I thought he was vicious, Marxist, lying racist. A man who claimed he was going to bring the country together but instead widened the racial divide.
I have nothing good to say about him. Whereas the left get glassy eyed and drool on their chins when thinking or talking about him.
Agree. And his dour wife too. Check out her WH portrait. A haughty sneer.
It seems the left is obsessed with surface traits and is easily fooled
All a Dem running for office has to do is scream Racism! Racism! Racism! and then talk about butterflies, unicorns and rainbows. Oh, and also spread the global warming lie.
Rewarding bad behavior is never a good idea.
And yet the Democrats do it all the time.
