Of course we are going to trade an arms dealer for a WNBA player...this administration has no strategy for literally, anything, aside from what aligns with their woke base.

Hey, might be that they could hang "this one" on Trumpty, nothing else seems to stick.

They can keep her.

The notion of releasing a dangerous terrorist in exchange of her should honestly be laughable and something no reasonable person should take seriously. If that trade happens, innocent civilians will be killed. But IтАЩm sure sheтАЩll still have a long list of grievances about the USA.

Once again, the Biden administration demonstrates that it is comprised of absolute morons. Like most people, I donтАЩt follow the WNBA so I canтАЩt help but wonder how many Americans, or Putin for that matter, ever heard of Griner before the geniuses at the State Department elevated her to a perch alongside St. Joan of Arc.

Putin may be a Machiavellian genius but without our woke media colluding with him and the requisite stupidity of Tony Blinken sheтАЩd be as worthless to him as the WNBA ratings are to whatever network covers it. Of course, I could be understating her value to Biden. As "a 6тАЩ9тАЭ queer woman of color with dreadlocks"... donning "a Black Lives For Peace jacket", she seems eminently qualified for a senior cabinet position in his administration.

This piece is about how Brittney Griner is the perfect weapon to inflame the American culture wars that have long been a strategic liability for us, because the American public cannot help but take its eye off the ball abroad to squabble at home.

I wish that your takeaway from the article at least paid lip service to that problem instead of focusing 100% of the top comment on...squabbling at home. We can focus on enemies abroad and criticize shortcomings at home, but Russia would prefer that we only do the criticism and forget about their role as a rogue state that has kidnapped American citizens.

So you're asking folks to ignore the details of this scenario and instead focus on Big Bad Putin? I've not read a single comment on here sympathizing with Putin. The facts of this case are the American government is considering a prisoner exchange that makes zero sense and appears to have little value beyond appeasing the mob.

I would argue that what you're suggesting (ignore the facts and focus on the "big picture") is exactly what is wrong in our country. MSM has told us that as long as something supports the narrative, it doesn't matter if it is true. For example, Orange Man is bad so who cares if Russiagate was completely made up--as long as we're "fighting for democracy," anything is acceptable. Believe it or not, Americans can be critical of this prisoner exchange while also being critical of Putin. It's MSM that tells us that by criticizing one side means you sympathize with the other.

While I acknowledge your point it misses the larger point Raziel made - she broke Russian law. She was not "kidnapped". She gave them the opportunity for exploitation. If one side could acknowledge that, there would be no division and we would defeat the Russian exploitation. But no, the goal is her release ASAP and any means to secure it are okay.

Lynne...i do feel for Griner, but what was she thinking? We keep seeing this Cobweb thought of thinking, here in the USA, i.e., No Punishment...

Isn't trading her for an anti-American arms dealer a bit like negotiating with terrorists? Seems to me like it's sending a bad signal.

Precisely right Lynne, Griner was not "kidnapped", and the narrative that she was unlawfully detained and imprisoned is misinformation meant to obscure the truth - she would not be in a Russian prison if she had simply followed the drug laws of the foreign country she was in. Thank you for clarifying that to the poster you replied to.

The squabbling at home would not be happening without the Left's hyperfocus on all the "reasons" that Griner is more important than every other American who is imprisoned abroad for breaking local laws. It's a weakness in American society. One can hardly blame an enemy nation for exploiting that weakness.

ItтАЩs not squabbling to suggest that trading an arms dealer who wants to kill Americans for a WNBA player is patently absurd and done only in service of the optics for one side of the political aisle.

As Peter notes in the article- there are many American citizens locked up by foreign governments who have received little timely US intervention on their behalves. Why is the US taking a different approach to Grimes? The answer is clear...the culture wars and тАЬsquabblingтАЭ at home. This is clearly the root cause.
