I typically don’t funds memes funny but saw one recently that was absolutely hilarious - it was a picture of Trump in the front passenger seat of a car and the rear door was open, the headline read “GET IN LOSERS, WE’RE GOING LOSING!”
John Wayne from Liberty Valance?? You have to be kidding....Wayne’s character had character, had loyalty and was willing to sacrifice himself for his community’s good. Yep, all those are qualities of the Orange man..for sure....
I her you - but I’ve seen that film half a dozen times. The villain isn’t Wayne it’s Lee Marvin and Wayne character is arguably the great hero of that film. His self sacrifice is the ultimate lesson from it and the reactions of all his old friends at his funeral attest to that.
So I agree that Donald Trump was the great upsetter of the political assumptions and culture - I actually had hoped that he would be able to use his unique position among Republicans to make transformational moves in areas of great political divide such as immigration. I was hoping - a forlorn hope as it turned out - that he would have a “Nixon to China” moment. Alas, he chose another path and ended up almost wrecking our Republic. The deeper problem is that Donald is not the end of it - the conspiracies and policy ignorant positions driving the Party’s new leaders have been destructive and as last Tuesday showed / a road to nowhere. Time to move on for sure - but not just Donald - for the whole anti-Democratic movement.
Agree. If you read the piece by Pence in the WSJ the only thing that came to mind about Trump's last days in office was that it read like a Shakespeare tragedy. Perhaps Lear. Or Macbeth. There is no second act for Trump and it's sad to realize he can't just go quietly.
Just as England needed Churchill to rally the Brits against Hitler, America needed Trump to restore Americans can-do attitude and reject the dark cloud of mediocrity that descended upon it during the Bush and Obama years. His domestic accomplishments - energy independence, the first real wage growth in decades, record low unemployment numbers for minorities, low inflation and interest rates that allowed modest income Americans to realize dreams like home ownership… are now all gone. His foreign policy achievements – getting NATO parasites to finally help finance their own defense, calming Kim Jong-un’s missile threat, ending Putin’s assault into Ukraine, restoring our southern border, implementing a phased withdrawal from shit holes like Afghanistan… have all been reversed.
Trump’s enemies don’t hate him because of his mean tweets or his narcissism. They hate him because he gave hope to those beaten down by the global elites who demand their subjugation. They hate him because he reminded the downtrodden of the American dream and provided a template for everyone to participate in it and was successfully implementing it. But most of all, they hate him because he threatens their place at the trough.
Before dismissing Trump, it would be a good thing ask if anyone else could have achieved the things he did despite the unprecedented assaults on him. Who else can withstand the withering attacks that inevitably will be directed their way. Look what the Trump haters are doing to Musk for having the audacity to facilitate free speech. I'm willing to wait two years for an answer.
Tim, although the Churchill analogy might be a bit much, I agree with almost all you said. They hate him for all those reasons - and more. They hate him particularly because he threatened the self-dealing parasites such as Biden who almost clearly took laundered money from the Chinese communists. Trump set the path but he now needs to step aside. We have a deep bench who know what needs to be done.
I'm not so sure about our bench strength. One reason Trump got so much done is that the country club republicans were terrified of him. Without Trump holding their feet to the fire the last two years the senate and house reverted back to the accommodating wussies we've come to abhor. Getting elected is one thing, getting something done is another.
I don't think we have a deep bench either. But, we do have DeSantis. I like what he did for Florida and think he's best for '24. He has definitely withstood assault and demonstrated leadership.
Before the country had Donald Trump, the Yankees had Billy Martin. Each served the purpose of being a 'turnaround manager'. Martin shocked overpaid crybabies into becoming better ballplayers, Trump forced a sclerotic political establishment to consider an unseen and unforetold threat.
Problem is, turnaround managers quickly wear out their welcome. Those they manage grow weary of their antics. The Yankees fired and then rehired Martin several times, every time the players needed to be read the riot act.
Trump's future? Unlikely to get a second chance, as he appears to have has worn out his welcome with the red team and effectively deployed for fearmongering motivation by the blue team.
Whether the blue team overplays its hand is yet to be seen.
I like it. I submit that President Donald Trump was the same person seen over the years prior to that, in the media, in The Apprentice and The Celebrity Apprentice, in movie cameos. I believe many thought his sitting behind the Resolute desk would bring about a "presidential" transformation but that did not happen (whatever appearing presidential really looks like). What worked for him in 2016 won't work anymore. I believe what will work is to not hit everyone with reasoned arguments and facts but something more feeling such as "Freedom Lives Here".

And is remembered forever by his friends as the true hero of the story - go back and see the last scene of the train ride back

Trump was elected for the same reason Biden was; the other option was even more horrible.

"Freedom Lives Here" - pretty much what DeSantis says in his acceptance speech. That and "Florida is where Woke goes to die":
