I grew up on a farm in rural West Virginia, and until I was in high school drank raw milk. I hadn't seen any since then until a few years ago, when I was able to find it locally. There is nothing like it. The smell and taste immediately transported me across the decades to a better time and place. In this rural area we now have a large Amish population; if they could avoid visits from the constabulary, I'm sure they would make it widely available.
Pasteurization virtually eliminated the transmission of tuberculosis via cow's milk, and that is not a thing to be taken lightly. If public health could be reasonably ensured, I would certainly support making raw milk available for anyone who wants it.
People don't remember the dangers of tuberculosis. But if you've read the James Herriot books, you'll probably remember how veterinarians had to go around testing cows for tuberculosis, and the loss of income that having to put down a cow with tuberculosis meant for small farmers.
Pasteurization was not invented for no reason. It was not a fad. It was a means of addressing a very real problem.
When we lived in the woods in Oregon, we owned a dairy goat, and I made a point of pasteurizing the milk, even though we were the only ones drinking it.
But if people want to drink raw milk, they should have that option.
I still own the old farm in West Virginia, though like many of the old subsistence farms, it is in poor repair and not being used AS a farm. Just some relatives living there now.
I don't have raw milk available where I live now, but would switch back in a heartbeat - not for any health benefits, if there really are any, but for the taste. And If I'm being honest, for the connection to a lovely, halcyon time in my life.
Raw milk may be fine on a small scale, serving customers who can afford the high price. But for the masses shopping at Walmart for milk for their kids, no way. Pasteurize. Do not risk getting sick on a mass scale. To me, raw milk is like not washing your hands after you use the bathroom. Probably OK, but why risk it?
Do you feel the same about the lettuce or cantaloupe you buy at the grocery store? Because the listeria and E. coli outbreaks aren’t coming from the raw milk (please correct me if you have research showing this is incorrect), it’s coming from that organic bag of spinach picked in California. As others pointed out, these farmers don’t want you coming to their farm claiming you got sick or the government investigating/fining/shutting them down. The vast majority of the farms prioritize cleanliness. Their farm shuts down, that quite literally bankrupts them.
I’ve been drinking raw milk for years, through three pregnancies and all three of my kids started drinking it as a supplement to breastmilk around a year old. I know my farmer (we do a cow share in southern VA) and have seen his farm and practices so I trust him and absolutely believe it benefits our family’s health. My kids are insanely healthy and I credit a lot of that to the raw milk and more traditional diet.
If anyone is interested in learning more about the health benefits of raw milk, I encourage you to check out the Weston A. Price foundation. There are chapters all over and they are great place to network with other likeminded folks who don’t view traditional foods as “Russian roulette” 🐮
You can get sick from contaminated spinach AND raw milk. So great that you can enjoy the luxury of knowing your cow and your farmer, but suggesting everyone else can too is just smug and narrow minded. People buy milk from Walmart in gallons for $2.38 for the kids. They need to know their kids won’t get sick. Pasteurization does that. So enjoy your special status, the rest of Americans can’t participate in your milk elitism.
I’m not sure where you took from my comment that I was being elitist about anything or that I was being smug when describing my experience. Clearly that was triggering for you but that wasn’t my intention.
It’s not a luxury, it’s a conscious choice that required time and effort and yes, costs more than Walmart milk. But we don’t buy Starbucks or fast food or packaged junk and my kids don’t have electronics so paying $10/gallon for raw, organic milk isn’t an insane sacrifice. Helps not having to pay medical bills for constantly sick kids; is that from raw milk? Not exclusively but overall focusing on food quality over other expenses is a decision we made for our family, who by the way is not rich or even close to it. it’s a bit judgmental of you to make assumptions as you did but hey, you’re free to express your thoughts! I was genuinely curious if you held the same contempt for other foods that carry as much or more risks.
Because the swells swoon before the naked emperor leading the latest fad, while we are led by a senile imbecile whose mendacious minions lie and spy with abandon. Sure, die on the hill of raw milk but bow and scrape as your liberties are stolen by the day.
Since the Woke Red Cross just changed the rules around donating blood in hopes of achieving HIV equity, I’m thinking we can probably skip worrying about the 26 people who drink weird milk being a “public health” risk.
Are you saying that people can receive HIV blood during a transfusion? Or that they use HIV blood for those who are already HIV positive? I am not up on this topic…
Yes. And it’s technically the fault of the FDA because it is their guidance, but the Red Cross put it on their website FAQ. Trans women who have sex with men can now circumvent the rule that men who have sex with men can’t donate within 3 months of sex.

(No. That is just how you know they are Democrats. The way you know there is cheating is because Democrats, from Joe Biden on down, are universally panicked and screeching about how Republicans will be able to cheat if they take over the process.)
Lol. Nah. You "answered" long ago. I just enjoy when people continually provide evidence/expose themselves for being exactly who I said they were. Really, you should have seen this coming when I set you up with the "how can you tell from a picture" - but you doubled-down and faceplanted right in it, cause you're dumb....and shit ;)
Owned in two steps. Pretty pathetic. And no amount of emojis is going to change that, KevinDurant.
So, you should probably keep your Chauvin/McMichaels fanboy mouth shut with your faux concern re: Fetterman.

No. You copy/pasted this question like five times yesterday and I never answered. That’s why it haunted you all night.
😂😂😂
Obviously, I don’t care if you pretend to think that things that are not racist are somehow racist. You think requiring ID is racist while also thinking it wasn’t racist for John Fetterman to see a black guy out jogging and grab his shotgun to go chase him down the street. Nothing you say has any validity.
Lol. Nah. Not haunted. Just enjoy owning you. And I want EVERYONE to see it, every time.

I never said the Fetterman issue wasn't racist/problematic - just that a Derek Chauvin/McMichaels fanboy like you has no credibility to pretend to be concerned about that.
Have no problem with voter ID. Doesn't matter anyway, the black people are still going to cheat/steal it, right KevinDurant?
I don't have to say anything for validity....just let YOUR words speak for themselves.

I did visit an Amish farm where their sanitation methods were so good that you could safely drink the raw milk. He had the testing gear to assure it. He and his wife were very proud of this. But even with this his milk goes into the system.
Anyone who wants to drink raw milk should probably find a milking stool and a farmer who will show them how to milk by hand. That way you learn up close and personal that those udders can be pretty dirty.
When my father was working in the mines, my mom took care of the milking duties until one day a cantankerous Guernsey kicked the milk bucket across the barnyard. After that my dad took it on. Of course we owned the requisite pride of barn cats; when Dad headed out to the barn, bucket hanging over his arm, the cats would follow him en parade, tails straight up like car aerials. They would sit on the opposite side of the cow in a row and every so often he would turn the teat toward one of them, squirting it right in the puss. They loved it and spent the next few minutes cleaning their faces with their paws. It was such entertainment for a little boy.
This reminded me of my youth. I started milking our family farm's cow at the age of 8 and continued until we sold the farm at age 14. My forearms were like popeye's. We only had one barn cat but she'd sit near me and I'd direct several streams of mik her way every morning. Cow's name was Bambi because she looked like a deer when we bought her. Of course, that look went away after her first calf...
Yep - I'm a city boy - but my granddad was a farmer - he had a couple of horses and some cows. I remember the same scene - but I wasn't there often.
Later we tried "suburban farming" - had a cow. Poor thing got mastitis (probably our fault) - I had to hand milk her to fix it. We never drank any of the raw milk. Eventually she went to the sale barn.
I grew up on a farm in rural West Virginia, and until I was in high school drank raw milk. I hadn't seen any since then until a few years ago, when I was able to find it locally. There is nothing like it. The smell and taste immediately transported me across the decades to a better time and place. Hi Jim! I'm curious if you've incorporated raw milk back in your diet? And is the farm still running? Best,
I still own the old farm in West Virginia, though like many of the old subsistence farms, it is in poor repair and not being used AS a farm. Just some relatives living there now.
