We are a wealthy nation. We can afford clean, humane institutions for those to mentally unstable to live in society. To protect both us and them. Fuck Focault.

Not about affording. It’s about the well intentioned misguided who believe they should be allowed to live in their own reality. Relativism in all its glory.
The "system" we have is a pseudo system posing as such in the aftermath of the country (well, really a handful of activists and NGO delusionals and some, as always, well meaning government folks; as usual the larger public was never asked and never gave approval) dismantling the actual system we used to have which at least was functional. Yes there were abuses and excesses but it could have been reformed rather than deleted. The problem is it’s a lot harder to build things than destroy them, something liberals, progressives and utopians never learn and will never learn.
Funding is an issue always but it is not the primary problem here. Though setting trillions of dollars on fire on autopilot and insisting that every penny is mission critical and can never be defunded or diverted to other purposes means it is not possible (for better or worse) for government to do anything big anymore.
There are funds. They are just being used for dei, green energy, and shipping subsidies for all that crap from China, the proxy war in Ukraine ... . So perhaps you are both correct. Further, perhaps it is time for all of us to unite, organize our priorities to place emphasis on existing urgent matters affecting US citizens and stop using funds to line the pickets of politicians and their "elite" pals.

Time to put an end to the untrue trope that “we are the wealthiest nation on the planet.” We haven’t been for decades.
You make a good point. I would say we are “wealthy enough” to give humane safe care to the mentally ill
Unfortunate choice of words. Focault would have liked that.

Not just relativism but post-modernism - a total rejection of truth and a shared reality
BS- you have no idea how hard it is to fund and maintain the system we have, let alone improve it.

We have so much money we just make different choices about how to spend it. Seems no one thinks twice about sending billions to Ukraine.
