Okay, so - why would Fauci and Collins want to fund research in a Chinese lab?
Simple - the same reason so many American firms make computers, sneakers, and drugs in China - to skirt American laws based on ethics and safety. Oh, and to save money and increase profits.
Look - until we bind companies that export things back to America to producing these things with American laws, this gray market will exist, to the detriment of all involved except for the profit-takers (including shareholders, market fund managers, and hedge fund managers).
We focus a lot on the Industrial War Complex but there are a lot of Industrial Complexes in Government (US and World Wide). People, in this case biological / medical, with power perpetuating that power between themselves. Let’s look at the top 10 or 20 groups or people funded by NIH year by year and I would guess they are the same or intertwined. Lots of back scratching and such to fund projects like you said in low regulatory environments. Also as a bio-profiteer, wouldn’t you follow the researchers who are likely to get the big government grants since they are likely less risk and better gain. Throw in the revelations that those journals publishing results of studies have been lacking in judging good studies. We definitely need to follow the money and see who are the major and consistent players that benefitting.
