I was in Seattle at the onset of the pandemic. My brother-in-law studies predictive models of the movements of disease for a firm employed by Bill Gates.

In Feb 2020, with the virus spreading for two months, he told me the coronavirus was just a racist right-wing conspiracy theory, no worse than the flu.

I had a long, hard conversation with him, and by the next day his team began studying the coronavirus. But I never asked him for their results because I was so horrified that Bill Gates was completely ignoring the pandemic as it spread.

But my bro told me to trust the CDC, "they're the best in the world!" Meanwhile South Korea was already rolling out millions of drive-through tests, while the CDC tried to send every test by snail-mail to a lab in Atlanta because that was the contact tracing model that worked for Ebola.
