In reference to your conversation with Rep. Mills: "...when there was no evidence to back that up..." You were tagged as a "liberal" because that is the NPR trope for evidence-we-don't-want-to-see. The walking around public with no journalistic bona fides sees the breathtaking failure (incompetence?) as prima facia evidence that if you were Iran, or Hillary, or Beelzebub himself, that measure of buffoonery is not what even the most cynical among us would believe our tax dollars had purchased. In fact, to the form, if the questions get longer in the tooth with no plausible, better explanation it simply becomes more meme-able (Epstein Didn't Kill Himself) fodder.
I think of the NPR superlative scale as the best measure of the divergence: "There is no evidence of the Biden family's corruption." [Candidate Biden on stage at the debate in 2020--"My son never took a nickel from China...] "With ABSOLUTELY no evidence of corruption, republicans are claiming..." [Biden leans on a letter signed by 51 former intelligence officials to "show" the Russian disinformation about his son's business dealings...despite having to acknowledge millions of dollars from China.] "With absolutely no evidence of corruption WHATSOEVER, Republicans continue to claim..." [here are the now corroborated texts, emails, cancelled checks...]
Rep. Mills may have mistaken you for the other team's propaganda machine, but he thought he recognized the "secret handshake."
