Especially not those Americans -- privileged, educated (or getting-educated) heirs to the tradition of campus activism. This grotesque mutation became possible when a force from the Old World insinuated itself into New World politics. The radical protests of the past were generally driven by people steeped in intellectual conceits, but the ones we're seeing now are driven by people steeped in visceral hatred. American students who've joined in these protests thinking of it as their progressive coming-of-age need to understand that following the lead of Students for Justice in Palestine is not at all like following the lead of Students for a Democratic Society.
