Late comment here, but I never understand this. People like Audubon, Jefferson, Washington, and many others, did not *stand* for slavery. We remember them for their other contributions, not because they stood for slavery and made that their life’s cause.

I’m also going to Monticello next week and while I known slavery will be talked about there, I hope it’s not the central issue. I want to see the house and learn about Jefferson, in all of his paradoxical glory.
