Having read the LONG Matthew Walther piece, what’s clear is that, at the end of the day, religion is a weird human fabrication—dreamed up either by people who are genuinely delusional, convinced they’ve seen or heard godlike things that no one else can, and somehow manage to rope others into believing them, or by cynical operators who use religion as a tool to exert power and control.
Whether it’s some long-forgotten fringe cult or one of today’s mainstream religions, they’re all built on absurd miracle stories and supernatural claims that any rational person would laugh off if they heard them fresh, without centuries of conditioning.
It’s all a lot of bullshit. For me I call the holiday season from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day. I give no religious or historical significance to any of this. I enjoy the season and yes, I do light Hanukkah candles and yes, we do have a Christmas tree. I am going to listen to that Bari Weiss honestly thing about early Christianity. On another note, I think she really fucked up on that 60 minute shit. I really don’t attribute trumpian influence to the decision, but I do question her editorial judgment on this one even though I believe 60 minutes is one of the most left wing news magazine shows and has been that way ever since it’s inception. oh yeah, and I watched that John Oliver show from prior to this recent CBS problem where he totally put down Bari Weiss with distorted clips and personal insults. He is an outright left-wing and should’ve stayed in England. I can only imagine if a right wing commentator ever put down a left-wing woman that was hired for a position in the manner that John Oliver trashed Bari The misogynist outcry from the left would be unbearable.
I’ll leave you to your Christmas joy. On Bari’s 60-second decision to hold the 60 Minute story, though, she did what any good managing editor would do — sent her lazy, hack reporters back for a different angle. I heard this story in August on some obscure publicly funded radio station. To be kind because it’s Christmas, the CBS gang piggybacked on the work others had done. The 60 Minute piece was as stale as that road kill your public works department has neglected to pick up. Bari simply told her stable of professional prima donnas to do their jobs.
For the record, I’m no FP groupie. The site is losing its luster, and if it were truly independent, it would at least mention this story.
I am of course mostly in agreement with you. I just think she should’ve let it play. Yes it is a stale story and most people would probably skip it anyway, and those who watched it already had their opinions and could give a shit less about a 60 minute hitch job
These were all, for the most part, a good read for this morning. The Charles Lane was good, because going through something like this with a family member, we're all at the point of, "ok, yes, you've had a rough time, now you have to choose how you're going to live the rest of your life."
