Well, this is odd. I left a comment and it had several hearts (oh, how sweet), and now it has disappeared. Thin skin, much FP? I’ll repeat it. Maybe it will stick this time. “This passes for “reporting”? I do not know the persons referenced in the article or the particular situation, but I live in Clarksville, had a child graduate from CMCSS, and minister to educators in the system. There’s something rotten about this article. It doesn’t pass the sniff test. It certainly doesn’t live up to self-proclaimed, self-righteous FP standards. (Yes, I’m a subscriber.). Dig deeper. Do better.”

Although Covid almost certainly had an impact on learning, far, far more damaging is the impact of children being babysat by tablets, starting before they are potty trained. Their brain development is being changed for the worse, and kids raised this way will never, ever be normal. Having been a teacher since the mid-1980s, I have seen this fall happen, and it started before Covid.

The non education of our youth shown in the declining scores on standardized tests is a great threat to the future of our country --thankfully the useless DOE is going to be gone --next the powerful teachers unions MUST be defanged --they are the gretest impediment to quality education in our country ! School Choice especially Charters must be nationwide and availability must be made to meet demand ! The so called dismissal of charges against the most corrupt mayor is simply a way for trump to control him -- Adams will not be re elected ( and hopefully neither will Hochul) ! Blaegovich should not have been pardoned but the pardon power which is absolute has been so mis used across the board that any criticism by either party of the other party's use of it is hypocritical ! WOW --maybe Trump will actually fully support Israel and destroy HAMAS and maybe even green light an Israel attack on IRAN's Nuclear Program --- and what if he also brings an end to the Russia/Ukraine War ( in full disclosure -- I do not care about Ukraine one bit ) !Regarding Musk and DOGE -- totally out of control --but YES there is much waste and fraud throughout the government agencies and programs and congressional oversight has failed to address this --so NOW we have helter skelter ! Hesgeth and Tulsi and RFK Jr should never have been confirmed ! And that is all I have to say today ! Oh yeah one more thing : Trump won the election for one reason so stop looking around for other reasons : JOE BIDEN gave him the election by NOT removing himself from running for re election and not announcing this right after the 2022 mid terms --- he was already not only incompetent but he was mentally compromised --- and Kamala was given the nomination and she was simply a disaster ! Bye Bye for now !

So a Joe Biden with a functioning brain or another democrat clone would have won the elections? Would he, she, they, them pursued the grand Democrat's plan of the opening of our boarders to illegal immigrants and every gangs franchises willing to come for the loot of Rome, gutted the Supreme Court by packing it, annihilate the senate with Washington DC statehood 2 forever Democrats senators, got rid of the 1st and second amendments, of women sports, and forcing us to re-learn grammar with mandatory use of pronouns according to any sex preference derangement under the threat of the over zealous FBI, of being socially deleted, economically de-banked, opening hunting seasons on the jews, the catholics...? Well, with all respect, let's agree to disagree.

I did not want a Democrat. I am just making the simple statement that in my belief another Democrat would’ve beaten Trump if he she they them whatever had a year to head start and there was a real Democrat primary so I’m really not sure if we agree or disagree.

So glad I’m a paid subscriber to an impartial, unbiased, “free press”. Only problem is you’re starting to sound like every other corporate media site out there.

The Free Press does not promise that its writers will produce balanced pieces. Each writer has their own perspective and can express it. TFP's balance comes from providing writers with a variety of perspectives.

I love the quote: “For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil there is only one striking at the roots.” The root of the problem with education is the degradation of family values. Children get sent to school as if it were day care. Parents have their dual income careers and expect children to be educated by nanny’s and overworked teachers. The failure of education is on the parents not the schools. Children are shielded by parents from consequences of bad behavior. I remember being physically tossed out of science class by a teacher because I wouldn’t stop talking. I remember having a yardstick whipped on my butt by a teacher for stuffing math class once. I learned quickly about choice and accountability. Kids today are shielded by their parents from the accountability part of the equation. Parents must be fully engaged with their children’s education or yes they might not be able to read their diploma when graduating from high school.

I disagree with the parents part. The single mother household, with multiple children, continues to rise. That woman doesn’t have the time or resources to be involved in the child’s education. It’s all government resources providing the parenting with terrible outcomes. My wife doesn’t work and stays home with our 3 year old daughter. We put her in daycare a few days per week to socialize and she’s already been moved to a classroom with 5 year olds to match her speaking ability. We’re doing some targeted interventions at home (some Hooked on Phonics), but just dedicated interaction greatly increases a child’s skills. You can’t do that as a single parent with multiple kids.

Doesn’t matter who created it. Now it is being repaired but sadly being done in a way that is hurting innocent people that relied on USAID for anti-malarial interventions, clean water, food to prevent famine and malnutrition, and more. Though what you do (and the current administration is doing important work), how you do it is equally important.

You are missing my point. I am not defending Democrats. I’m simply pointing out that the process being used could be more disciplined and orderly.

Please. Student IQs didn't go down by 8 points because of Covid lockdowns. IQ measures ability to learn, not what you have learned. Big difference.

Will's avatar

Jared - in no way do I disagree with what you are saying. But , lockdowns didn’t impact their inherent ability to learn (IQ) — it limited their ability to learn because of the changes to schools methods - remote learning, etc. My only point was to distinguish IQ impact (insignificant) from learning loss (significant).

The years spent in lockdown, masking, etc. impacted childrens' ability to learn and grow during important formative years. There are parents still struggling with their children's speech impediments because of masking.

These children are both socially and educationally stunted. This will absolutely impair their ability to learn and integrate into society the way someone with a healthy childhood would.

Children have to be taught how to learn effectively, and they've been denied that. I've met plenty of fellow middle aged adults who lack those skills, but COVID was unique in that it tried to screw everyone equally. The middle and upper class can afford tutors though.

"Fogel was held for three and a half years for possessing less than an ounce of medicinal marijuana."

Yes, but just like Brittany Griner, he violated Russia's strict drug laws. The question is, why did Biden work hard to free Griner, but not Fogel? That bothers me.

Re: Straws. Very good article. Chart: China puts 8.8 Million Tons of Plastic Waste in the Ocean every year. USA 0.3.

The number one way to save the environment: Don't buy things Made in China.

Factories in China dump all Plastic & Toxins & waste into the Ocean.

Don't buy bamboo plates & utensils& straws & toilet paper. They call it "eco-friendly" but it's the opposite. Don't buy anything bamboo.

Buy straws, utensils, plates etc Made in USA (or Canada or any country with high standards ie Japan or Korea).

Costco Brand (Kirkland) plastic cutlery set, plastic plates; Walmart Great Value plastic cutlery, Dixie paper plates, Chinet brand plastic & paper plates, are all good, inexpensive options (I buy all these)

There is no reason stated to keep the DOE but say it shouldn’t be gotten rid of. You say schooling is a local issue but think we should keep a Washington monolith that does nothing but require all sorts of useless mandates that they don’t pay for while taking at lease 20% off the top of taxes collected. And there in lies the rub. Nothing good to say about DOE but you want to keep it. What school did you learn to apply that kind of logic at?

"saying he should not have paraded their son X Æ A-Xii—a.k.a. Lil X—around the Oval Office"

If my mom tried to stop me from visiting the Oval Office I'd be mad. That's a hell of a privilege. That's the kind of thing that can open doors. Things like this are why Hunter's baby momma wanted the Biden name.
