On a more immediate level, the reason El-Sayed won is that the Establishment Democrats' election rigging effort fell short for some reason. A consistent double-digit lead in all of the polls for a candidate that is disfavored by the Democratic Party just doesn't magically vanish on election day. On the contrary, media polls are designed to suppress support for those candidates, so you'd expect his margin to be greater than the polling.
So it might be interesting to explore what went wrong there. Were there logistical problems? Did they just not count properly? Or maybe they're planning on remedying the situation with a bunch of late-arriving mail-in ballots. Or perhaps they'll force him to drop out like they did with Platner. The Dems have been very consistent about one thing ever since 2004, and that is that primary voters don't really have much, if any, say in who the party nominees will be. So either they just messed up here, or else maybe they truly wanted El-Sayed to win, but had to put up the smokescreen of trying to knock him off in order to project an image of the party as a whole being more moderate than it actually is.
