My deepest thanks to Coleman Hughes. As part of the unabashedly patriotic “choir” who is surrounded by suprisingly - or is it willfully - ignorant progressives in Massachusetts, I really appreciate having gained an avenue of conversation with them.
Love of america is not and should not be conditional in who occupies the oval office. Very easy to say: "I Love America."
A harder utterance , especially for a progressive, is: " I am a proud American. " Can you imagine Janey Fonda or Di Niro occasionally view lady saying those words.
All of this begs a few questions related to this matter. If one believes and is frequently screaming america was born in sin, is still systemically racist, is filled with white supremacists and Christian nationalists , how can they say love America or are a proud American?
So excuse me if I take with a few pounds of salt expressions of patriotism by those who carry their No Kings signs and have made clear for decades their disdain and rarely if ever express any gratitude for their good luck in being born here.
Just the words God Bless America can give many the vapors
Sorry, but it is not that Proggies take America for granted. They absolutely despise America and everything it stands for. The problem, as they see it, is that whites founded America, and whites are evil. Therefore, America is evil. As perfect human beings, always on the correct side of history, and with a mandate to help us lesser dullards and simpletons, they see their mission as setting us straight and teaching us the (many) errors of our ways.
Although despise is a strong word, I fear your premise is truer than I wish it were. Last night I attended the reopening of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s, Art of the America’s galleries. Billed as celebration of America’s 250th, it was instead filled with selective facts and distorted histories of the people who made this country possible. It was nauseating. Clearly the staff are true believers in “The 2019 Project” and found it impossible to give men like General Henry Knox, who literally saved the Revolution on more than one occasion by providing desperately needed support to General Washington, anything close to the commemoration he deserves. The absolute vacancy of information about the genuinely heroic efforts made by America’s revolutionaries was truly disturbing and disappointing.
That, it is. Many private K-12 schools have faculty that are, essentially, brainwashing our vulnerable children and teens, too. And because many progressives immediately label moderates as Nazis, it feels kind of hopeless. I feel guilty for being a bystander to the anti-Americanism of this country’s schools.
I'm always confused by those who insist our nation was founded on and rose to greatness by white supremacy, therefore illegitimate. Does anyone consider the Japanese mono-culture and mono-ethnic society as Asian supremacy? Yes, in the past the U.S. was a single-ethnic society. Today, Asia and parts of Africa feature the highest concentrations of single-ethnic societies.
A little bit hard to be enthusiastically waving the flag right now when America elected a selfish, moronic, compulsively greedy grifter president. How many of Israel’s supporters in America now can hardly wait to wave our flag and celebrate the Dear Leader who just stabbed Israel in the back?
Fred, not sure how old you are, but, please, wave that flag. Think of all the Americans you know today who are good people trying the best they can. Think of our nation’s long history of doing good, both in our own country and abroad. And if that doesn’t work, watch “John Adams” on HBO or read “Rise to Rebellion” and “The Glorious Cause” by Jeff Shaara, and wave that flag for the memory not only of the brilliant, noble leaders of the Revolution, but for the farmers and craftsmen who fought for the Continental Army in bare feet. In winter. Wave your flag with glory in your heart, for all of these great Americans.
And let's all resolve to get a little more involved in politics, to try to get a brilliant, rational, educated, unselfish President elected next time.
