Bottom line is, who could have seen Slow Joe’s policies being so disastrous for the country, economy, and the entire world? Oh yeah, Obama said it best, “Never underestimate Joe’s ability to F__k things up “. Well also anyone with a rational mind also could see this happening.

I've been against the Ukraine business from the start. Not because I like Russia or Putin (I absolutely do NOT!). But because I was aware of the things the U.S. had done in Ukraine--starting 2014--that helped set up this conflict. Things that--whether they amounted to actual provocation or not--gave Putin ready excuses to *claim* that Russia was provoked.

Meanwhile, the media helpfully ignored Ukraine's years-long civil conflict against its eastern Russian-speaking provinces, as if that had nothing to do with anything.

And it quickly became obvious that this was a proxy war with Russia, cheered on by people who seem to be disappointed that the Cold War ever ended.

As time has gone on, more and more has been revealed about activities by U.S. politicians (evidently on both sides of the aisle) that basically amount to money-laundering. Considering the high level of corruption in Ukraine, it's not surprising that became a prime location for that kind of high-dollar fraud.

Recently it has come out that peace talks would have been welcomed months ago...but the U.S. squashed them. At this point, Ukrainians are suffering and dying because corrupt leaders there and in the U.S. would rather make money than save lives.

I am fairly certain the average Gaza resident would like to just live but with Hamas stealing everything and choosing to elect violence, you sure can not give in to killing. That will only get you more killed. So you have a choice, kill them or let them continue to kill. That’s a question for Israel to answer and not me. The war between Israel and Hamas is many things: a fight for the Jewish state’s survival

As Israel's and American citizen, I fully disagree with this statement, Hamas is in no way danger for survival of Israel, nor is Iran. This is not Yom Kippur War or some wars from the past. What happend on 10/7 was more similar to 9/11. Small group of fanatics have by luck, incompetence of Israeli government or combination of both things have managed to commit massive terrorist attack.

Question now is, will Israel be smarter that USA has been, we ended in 2 decades of endless wars, that have done nothing but eroded our stance on global stage and at same time cost us trillions of $$$.

And for US this is a test, will it give in to neocons and military industrial complex and will it bring us to another foreign engagement in middle east.

Its like we havent learned anything from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Native English speakers have no idea how hard it is to learn English as a 2nd language. It's hard for people to learn any new language, and English speakers (especially Americans) feel that everyone should address us in perfect English. It is another trait that makes us look even more entitled than usual to the rest of the world. I've tried Hindi, German, and Spanish, and retained only bits and pieces. Those speaking ESL get a lot of slack from me, as I assume they are very articulate in their native tongue.

I try to limit my pedantism to native English speakers fucking up their own language, using made up words like irregardless (even my spell check knows that's not a word). If one can't even do one's own language properly, perhaps shy away from berating others how are doing it in addition to their native tongue. And also to point out mistakes when made by people who are blathering hate so loud that they forget even simple things like i before e, except after c. I agree with you probably more than you think. Let me preface this by saying that I served in the Marine Corps under Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 41 and Clinton. I have never been a member of, or beholden to the Republican or Democratic parties.

Clinton said he loathes the military but repeatedly sent our people into shitholes that we had no business being in. It was under Clinton that we became the world's policemen. Therefore, I voted for W in 2000 because he promised "No nation building." Soon after, he started two wars of choice and pushed through the so-called PATRIOT Act, so I have voted Libertarian ever since. Not that I believe in the LP, but it's my way of flipping the bird to both major parties and simply not voting is a sign of nothing more than apathy. I want them to know that I actively reject them.

I rate W as the second worst president of my lifetime, second only to Lyndon Johnson with over 10,000 Americans killed for no good reason vs. 59,000 killed by Johnson.

History shows that being prepared for war is the only path to peace. For all of his other faults, and there were many, Reagan was the only one who understood the concept of Peace Through Strength. I voted for him both times and everyone I knew was proud to serve under him.

Trump seems to understand it, but there are too many other reasons that I never have and never will vote for him.

Under Ford and Carter, the military was neglected and Carter even said that we did not need a pay raise at a time when a Corporal who was married rated Food Stamps and if they had a child, rated Welfare. Carter dithered during the hostage crisis and we hung our heads in shame to be serving under him. That was one of the few occasions where an aggressive response was appropriate and we are paying the price for Carter's lack of leadership to this day.

I was going to vote for Carter in '76, but we deployed to Norway that fall and even though absentee voting has been around since the 1864 election, they made no effort to make us aware of that. It was only later that I was glad that I did not vote for him. I will be the first to say that Carter was the best ex-president we've ever had, but the most feckless Commander-in-Chief that I ever served under.

The first lesson of economics is scarcity. The first rule of politics is ignoring the first rule of economics. Thomas Sowell (quote approximate).

He also said that when people demand the impossible, only liars can satisfy them. The logical corrolary of course is that stupid and decadent people more or less demand to be lied to. The irony in our own time is that most of the time the lies are obvious but most people in this country STILL can't figure them out. Figuring THAT fact out is a preoccupation of my own.

Expand full comment

Today we call the people who seem to have lost their minds and believe any lie they’re told, “Stupid”, for want of a better word. It always seemed to me to be an inadequate word for the insanity. But I’ve changed my mind. Here’s why it is so apt, in Bonhoeffer’s own words from prison.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer vehemently opposed Hitler, Nazism and Eugenics even though it cost him his life. The Nazis executed him just before WWII ended. He was a man of great intellect, they couldn’t bear that.

“Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease. Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed – in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical – and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. For that reason, greater caution is called for when dealing with a stupid person than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/760019.Letters_and_Papers_from_Prison)

I watched a documentary on Bonhoefer. He was heroic. He didn't need to be in Germany. He had a post in New York from which he easily could have sat out the war. But his conscience would not allow him.

And agreed. Being stupid is being without reason, and as one of the Founding Fathers once wrote, trying to reason with someone who has renounced it is like giving medicine to someone already dead.

Bonhoeffer was a true hero in the fact that he spoke up loudly and clearly when he knew it would cost him his life. Today, our moronic politicians support a terrorist group and more than likely fundraise off those efforts and get reelected.

At this point, it would be a game changer to find one politician who is actually intelligent and can fix actual problems. Smarts in the US, especially at the very top, are in short supply,

Ukraine......Israel......maybe Taiwan next......not talking about all the other conflicts the US choose to involve itself which do not make it into the headlines or the enormous burden of maintaining more than a thousand military bases worldwide....to suppress any opposition to the American Empire wherever it occurs.

But in order to retain its sole superpower status it has to pretend it can. Well America's enemies have studied history and know how to knock the big bully out. Just start conflicts here and there and over there, all at the same time and soon enough the giant will fall of exhaustion......

Tunes will change with the right leader. These country’s “leaders” are cowards looking for protection and security. We just have to be the ones to give it.

The podcast was really terrific. Thank you. Unfortunately it took you 50 minutes to finally acknowledge that, more than anything else, the incompetence and corruption of Bibi and his entourage is at the heart of the problem. He miscalculated that by having a number of competing Palestinian organizations he could avoid a two-state solution. Never, ever underestimate your enemies.

Yeah, because the Arab states want a two state solution. Ha!

The stated goal of the Arab states in the region according to the 1967 Khartoum Resolution is the three No’s. It has not been rescinded to date:

Khartoum Resolution known as "The Three No's"; No peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, no negotiations with Israel.[1] The summit also resolved that the "oil-rich Arab states" give financial aid to the states who lost the war and to "help them rebuild their military forces."[2] The final communique of the meeting "underscored the Palestinians' right to regain the whole of Palestine—that is, to destroy the State of Israel."[3] The outcome of this summit influenced Israeli foreign policy for decades.[4]”

So No three times to any notion of peace or resolution. The Arab states don’t want Jews. Period. It’s hard to deny after 10/7/23.

He is also massively corrupt and caught up in his own ego. His desire to push the boundaries of the country’s legal framework distracted him from the real threat. No matter what he chooses next his political career is over.

I'm not so sure. He may come back like "the New Nixon."
