This TGIF has been bothering me for 3 weeks and i couldn't wait to get back home from my travels to give a load of "feedback" about how annoying and disappointing it was to receive this snarky, know-it-all NY Magazine voice from the only place left where you DON'T have to read this kind of bias. So am now just writing to <heart> the Common Sense community for saying all that and more. Thank heaven everyone was as bothered by this as I was! *restores faith in humanity*

I was turned off when I read: "But after reading about all the scoundrels involved in peddling this thing, and their various motivations, it isn’t hard to see why the press was so wary of this story"

A total apologist for the left wing media. Weiss Ladies - please don't allow anymore folks like this to besmirch your brand.

Over in Martha's Vinyard, the local authorities may have responded with shock, but it looks like the problem of 50 undocumented people was ably handled by its citizens. According to Alan Dershowitz, private donors contributed funds and housing was quickly found for the undocumented people. It looks like they probably received better care than what they would have received had they remained in Texas. Hence, I don't think the stunt actually qualified as "cruel."

Since I don't see the railroad strike mentioned in the comments:

Labor Secretary Marty Walsh was involved in the negotiations to avert the railroad strike. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-reaches-tentative-agreement-with-rail-workers-strike-2022-09-15/

I'm not sure criticizing Transportation Secretary Buttigieg for not being involved makes sense? I suppose either person could work the problem. It would be reasonable to decide the Secretary of Labor has better skills regarding labor negotiations. Wise leaders recognize who has the best skills for the task, even when it is someone else.

Well done. I especially liked the part about the Royals. Just don't get it.

The problem the Palestinian’s have is they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. They haven’t had a national election in over a decade. Almost half of the country is controlled by Hamas a proxy for Iran.

Fascinating read of a far-leftist’s views and misunderstanding of current events. Such creative use of adjectives. Interesting selection of “facts” to cite as “evidence”. Proving once again that Progressive brains are just wired differently. Save our country -- vote Republican!

Vis a vis the Martha's Vineyard situation, perhaps the next plane loads should go to Nantucket. That and delivering bus loads to each one of Nancy Pelosi's homes. This is coming from someone who sincerely believes Donald Trump was the worst President in the history of the United States. The GOP is crazy and corrupt. The DNC is simply corrupt and so out-of-touch that Marie Antonetta seems grounded.

The Democratic Elite will now have to deal with the 30+ years of their betrayal of the American Experience. The effectuation of the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, the Great Recession, and the immiseration of millions of Americans by gutting manufacturing and not investing in infrastructure in this country is on you, DNC.

Cruel ... reckless and just plain wrong”??

First of all, NBC has reported that the Biden administration has been flying immigrants to distant locations since last year (the report is on YouTube.)

Secondly, if Martha's Vinyard has designated itself as a sanctuary city, why don't those incredibly wealthy people contact the governors of border states and offer assistance? What is all this media screeching about? Why does this town have to declare a state of emergency and call in the National Guard? My home town, Houston, had no warning of Katrina, yet we were able to absorb thousands of NOLA refugees, feed them, house them, provide medical care. You can’t handle 50 people??? Stock up on extra water, cots and blankets. Call the Red Cross and ask how they manage to handle unforeseen disasters. Ask what to do if 50 extra people show up unannounced and in need. I bet any 14 year old could coordinate this.

Relax everybody; let’s do what Shawn asked - if only for a couple of seconds - and be kind. Perhaps, out of fear of losing his job at the Times, Shawn is afraid of writing a truly unbiased article. You know they fire and ostracize writers who write outside of their approved viewpoint. That said, I’m going to sit back and wait on Bari and Nellie and hope they come back before my Common Sense renewal comes up!

Doesn't he say he works for New York magazine, not the Times?

You’re correct, my mistake, but the same culture exists at the New York Magazine.

Sorry but you lost me near the beginning when you seem to argue that some form of journalistic integrity had the MSM avoiding the Hunter story. Oh Please! They breathlessly shouted about pee tapes, Russiagate etc. etc for years with less evidence than the Hunter story. The only difference was that the pee tapes and Russiagate were lies oh and that they were trying to smear Donald Trump. For me it is clear that the MSM owners told them to shut up about the laptop so they did.

Both Bill de Blasio in NY and Gavin Newsom in SF bussed homeless US citizens out of their cities as mayors but now Newsom runs to "daddy" Merrick Garland accusing DeSantis of kidnapping. I can see how Newsom might believe that would work since Garland was willing to accuse parents concerned for their children of being terrorists. And, of course, Biden has flown illegals in the dead of night, dumping them in unaware communities.

Pretty sure the key here is "US Citizens", and "with their consent". And actually, Republican states and run cities have been bussing their homeless to Democratic cities and states for a long time.

I've read many profiles of the SF homeless/addict population that confirms this - many are not native/resident California citizens. And many were supplied with transportation to SF and other "blue" locales... including Hawaii which was swamped with "transports" of homeless flown out there and dropped off *with their consent*, but still.

DeSantis's migrants were shipped out without their knowledge and/or consent of what was happening, let alone how this would impact their applications for safe harbor. Much reporting indicates they were falsely led to believe they were being transported to immigration adjudication, or for other "processing" reasons that were made to seem legitimate. None, apparently, were told they were just going to be dropped off and left to fend for themselves 1000 miles away from the border crossing they were attempting to meet, and 1000+ miles away from the actual places of adjuctation on their status would take place, and with no means to return to it.

I do agree that "US Citizens" is key here. US citizens have certain rights in our country. The illegal aliens are not being mistreated by being sent to Sanctuary Cities who voted to have them. They were kicked off of Sanctuary Martha's Vineyard instead of being placed in tents on Obama's acres or sent back to Venezuela.

Loved your "Everybody Wants a Raise at the New York Times" and the unravelling of "The Sordid Saga of Hunter Biden’s Laptop" and your breezy romp through the news.

But I have to wonder why the only place I see video of the streams of people entering our southern borders is on Fox News? No one addresses the border policy until taxpayer-funded "stunts" like Martha's Vineyard are enacted. And why do we not read of all the plane loads of immigrants flown to many areas of the country at night by the federal government, also with taxpayer dollars? According to CNN, these immigrants are supposed to be children, but the video I have seen show mostly adult men as the passengers. Would love to see someone shine some serious light on border policy and reality.

The writer needs to stick to New York where his political opinions drive the popular narratives. US needs journalism not 24/7 echo chamber pontificating paid for by the 1%.

Some fun numbers on Martha's Vineyard-

4,700+ Housholds

$1,200,000.00+ Median house price

$5.4 billion in real estate value.

Vacancy at multiple houses

And zero charity for 50 people in this sanctuary.

Help me understand the 'lack of resources' statement?
