It won’t matter until this absurd scientism is defeated, either at the polls, or by not attending the US Open, en masse.

Even the press is tired of Covid 19. Why can't these idiots let everybody else get on with their lives. Why-because they will not relinquish that power that they never had before. They are like home owner's associations on steroids. They love to exert their power to make other people squirm. Enough already.

Bari and Nellie - hope you are doing well. Not only is this potentially relevant for your family, but it seems more than relevant given some of the pieces Common Sense has shared already. This is not fringe, anti-vax conspiracy. This is the United Kingdom's "Public Assessment Report" published in mid-August:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/regulatory-approval-of-pfizer-biontech-vaccine-for-covid-19/summary-public-assessment-report-for-pfizerbiontech-covid-19-vaccine

“In the context of supply under Regulation 174, it is considered that sufficient reassurance of safe use of the vaccine in pregnant women cannot be provided at the present time”

“Women who are breastfeeding should also not be vaccinated."

After the United States mandated this for so many, how is this conscionable?

I'm always a fan of you incites. I think this is a very astute and important article. Thank you for writing it. My children are double boosted and wearing a mask all day in school. STILL! So forgive me if I don't get all worked up about a multimillionaire tennis player.

Wake Forest has already declared that they will mandate the bivariant vaccine, which is set to be approved prior to the completion of testing. College students do not need any more of these injections. How do we make the mandates end? Not opposed to vaccines. Opposed to mandated vaccines. Please evaluate your own risk, and respond accordingly.

It's bird flu that keeps me awake.

any objective analysis will have to wait until a change in the House or Presidency. The Dem party has way too much at stake to have to admit that most of their positions were wrong. I don't hold out much hope that the current restructuring of the CDC will accomplish much.

Also, if you want to see what I went through at my hospital, watch Five Days at Memorial, a series currently running on Apple TV. If you don't have Apple, buy the book. It captures the experience extremely well.

Aren't there thousands/millions of unvaccinated migrants coming across our border? Where is the consistency in US policies?

Those is nothing but a threat directed at the cooties carriers and other deplorables. When the powers that be can prevent "...one of the best tennis players of all time..." from competing, you're supposed to think, "If they can do it to him, they can definitely do it to me! I'd better get the jabs right away!"

Yeah, no.

Sane, common sense, factual...#truth. It's maddening to read the nasty, EVIL, ignorant comments on Nole's Twitter feed after he diplomatically posted on there to his fans that he won't be at the US Open. But even if those people read this...they would still make ridiculous comments and sling invectives at him simply to show how "virtuous" they are. Note to self: Stay off of Twitter if I want to keep sane. Thanks Dr Prasad for this and for past writings about Covid....I can't imagine the shit slung at you recently because of it....

Precise and to the point, thank you Vinay Prasad for stating clearly what I believe to be the feeling of a silent majority. When rules make no sense I would encourage civil disobedience. There is from governments across the world that backed up a narrative of excessive fear, the desire to punish those that did not comply.

In other words, let's make an exception for a celebrity tennis player. Requiring vaccinations is much more than one person. It is about setting a cooperative example for everyone's best interest in society. This essay and many of the comments are self-centered politics rather than doing what's right for the greater good. When it comes to contagious disease, we are all in this together and must work together in a cooperative spirit. Djokovic's refusal to get vaccinated is unadulterated selfishness, especially in light of his celebrity status.

I assume you're being sarcastic, Mark, given that the vaccine is neither preventing transmission nor infection, and - as Dr. Prasad mentioned - no longer serves (or ever did serve) a public health benefit.

Medical science has established that the Covid vaccine in fact, do prevent the transmission of Covid and mitigates the effect. To say otherwise, is false and political propaganda. Vaccines are a proven prophylactic. https://time.com/5942076/proof-covid-19-vaccines-work/

The overwhelming consensus in the medical community is that vaccinations are a significant defense against Covid and the spread of Covid. This is not about politics. This is about respect for your fellow citizen and acknowledgment that we are all in this together. I wish you the best of health and pray that you are vaccinated for your own good, your family, and your community.

Doc, you forgot to mention the people who cross your boarder ( non citizens) without proof of a vaccine.

As usual, nothing but kudos and going rabidly beyond the author by venting about the illiberal or downright fascist state coercion for making vaccine rules. The tyranny, the complete incompetence of public health officials. Why didn't I see the horns on Dr. Fauci's head? The decision to keep unvaccinated people from entering was made by people who spend their entire life on trying to figure this stuff out to the best of their ability, as shocking as y'all might find it. It's imperfect for sure and some COVID policies have been stupid. But it's based on statistical models that are not about YOU individually, which doesn't make it totalitarian at a minimum. Bleeping tennis wasn't the consideration and has nothing to do with it. The physician author could have considered that. For my part, just knowing there's going to be one fewer narcissist in the country at one time will be a modest comfort.

Vinay Prasad has published several articles that mislead about the benefits of new cancer treatments and misstated the cost of drug development.. he’s a publicity hog with little depth but much deceit.

Can you provide links w.r.t. to the specific articles you are referring? I am working in the field of hematology/oncology, and would like to explore more. Thanks.

One more among many.. in this case Prasad invokes Ilhan Omar and uses an anti-Semitic slur against two Jewish cancer researchers, accusing them, without evidence, that their research is motivated purely by money.
