I posted this morning on JD. I suggested two authors. I wanted to clarify why I chose them. It is illustrative to do so. McWhorter, in many ways speaks to the linguistic/historical context and application of language to the real world and academic world of children, young and inexperienced. The academic world (one in which I worked/chaired for decades). Hitchens, on the other hand, spoke to the REAL WORLD OF POLITICS, REALITY TESTING, NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN AND AMONG (INTER/INTRA GROUP) international CONFLICTs. REAL MEN AND WOMEN. This world I worked in INTERNATIONALLY - CONFLICT AS A SME) for decades. So, Academic versus REAL are two disparate worlds, a continuum or realities that shape nations. From GRADUATE campus to REAL WORLD.

In Spain wife of PM Sanchez accused of corruption. She has been ordered to not leave the country. Is it not possible she was looking to get to cali for asylum and sanctuary? I shall refrain from making some easy to write jokes

Guess it isn't too soon for TFP to focus on taking J.D. Vance down.

On JD. There are four forms of intellectual sharing (written or spoken form) that gets my dander up, for good or for bad. Difficult to know, but what the hell. 1. What you Believe in private. 2. What you do in private. 3. What you do in public. 4. What you say in public. Based upon these four, I would not vote for JD if he continues along the path he is currently. Too “FAITHY” FOR ME. You figure out why. Trump’s legacy will be promulgated by JD or not. He seems to be his own man. You know the phrase WWJD? Well, I certainly have my own thoughts, earned over many mango seasons. INDIVIDUALISM is a key to those thoughts. But just for sh**ts and G*ggles, I always like to ask: What would Christopher Hitchens think? What would John McWhorter think? I will leave the rest to you.

"Vance casts himself as a 'Christian statesman,' yet seems perpetually frustrated by the Church’s criticism of his political agenda."

Sorry, it's admirable that Vance is a Christian, and so am I; but I don't need my politicians to flaunt their religion.

I don't like it when Zohran Mamdani does it, and I don't like it when Vance does.

And if they're fanatics, so much the worse.

Opportunists hoping to attract a core and that the rest of us ignore flashing red signals -- just what we need.

IRAN KILLS 150 AMERICANS IN 2 DAYS!

Over the weekend Hezbollah killed 5 IDF soldiers.

That would be the equivalent of killing >150 Americans.

How should Israel respond?

How would America respond?

Clarity Seeker's avatar

Depends on who you ask

I know how I would respond.

Hope the questions spur debate.

Or at the very least reflection.

So gen z increasingly desires violence to save the country. From what? What exactly does violence mean and include? Murdering a C Kirk or Healthcare CEO ? Do they mean their violence should not be prosecuted or that jurors ( and judges) who share their views should ignore evidence? If their violence is met with violence do they care ? Do they favor that the violence be undertaken by others who share their hatred or do they plan themselves to partake ( more likely when the odds are strongly in their favor)? Does the desired violence include guns in cities where gun laws are strict ( ie. to save the country is possession of an illegal gun acceptable or even encouraged)?

Here's the bad news: as the boomers and other older types pass on and are replaced by those who follow the gen z types , the proclivity for violence will only increase because the schools, media and politicians are already indoctrinating the next generation to justify and resort to violence for the RIGHT CAUSE( ie THEIRS) and those who favor the " country saving " violence will possess greater voting power .

Rotten schools, corrupt media and lying politicians are indoctrinating these kids. And, it could get very ugly. On the other hand, if these youngsters were taught a little history, they would see that the violent political upheavals of the past two centuries often resulted in the mass slaughter of those who loudly demanded bloodshed in the first place. But I suppose teaching history is racist these days.

Steve G's avatar

This newest generation has a very distorted view of “violence”. They have seen protestors /rioters literally handled with kid gloves. Cops being assaulted, giving ground on riot lines, allowing “the protestors room to express their feelings”, charges dismissed in courts. At some point this will end. They will not like it when actions result in real consequences.

Clarity Seeker's avatar

They do like to gang up on a single person and then kick them in the head when they are on the ground. I call that attempted murder

The truest comment you have ever made.

We are indeed in Deep Kimchi my friend.

JD Vance is an impressive man who overcame a difficult childhood to rise to the top. For this, he is viciously condemned by the Anti-Democracy Party, also known as the Democrats.

I will never forgive them for this and many other transgressions, such as their celebration of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, their despicable attacks on his widow, and similar celebrations of the would-be Trump assassins and other criminals and traitors.

If you disagree with someone’s policies, express it in writings and podcasts and lectures, not by celebrating his death. It’s as though half of our country has regressed to a medieval mindset no different from Al Qaeda, ISIS, and Josef (“You have a man, you have a problem; no man, no problem”) Stalin.

UNBLOCKED!

To any individual who I have blocked I apologize.

As you can plainly see you are unblocked

Sorry, I didn’t explain why I took that action.

My reasons for blocking you.

1. I’ll debate anybody on any issue. I LOVE debate. BUT when you hurl insults and only insults, I will block you.

2. When I have sunk to your level that is my fault not yours’s. I cannot control your hate but I can or should control mine.

From this day forward…

I’m not going to respond to an insult.

If you wish to make a cogent argument, make one.

Delete the insult and start again.

Otherwise, I don’t have time for you.

What prompted this post, Lanny?

Lanny's avatar

I blocked Paul J.

Over the course of the years I have blocked 12 others who refused to make a case for their point of view but were relentless in insulting folks.

Paul started with a personal insult and zero issues.

Unfortunately I took the bait and sank to his level.

I have resolved as written to try to the best of my ability to not do that in the future.

Hope you and anyone else who sees me leaving the reservation will gently point me back in the correct direction.

Twain was credited with…”Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

Sounds like a good plan.

Clarity Seeker's avatar

Tis better to ignore than block?

Lanny's avatar

To each his own.

I would never censor anyone.

I will listen to the absolutely most despicable ideas.

I will not necessarily respond.

BUT I will not tolerate playground bullies whose concept of debate is to scream personal insults.

Even when blocked each individual has the righ to continue to spew hate.

I reserve the right to not be a part of it.

Case by case as in all things in life.

JD Vance goes on the podcast of a virulent antisemite, Megyn "Mein Kampf" Kelly and happily announces that Tucker Qartalson and his Groyper Nazis are part of the GOP coalition, after Trump had explicitly said that there is no room for antisemitism in the GOP. He then has the nerve to tell Jews that being antiIsrael doesn't mean you are antisemitic. I'm so glad that the Vice President is telling Jews that we are too "Jewish" to know when someone is being a Jew-hating shitbag or not. The man is unbecoming of the Office of the VP of the United States. He gives "Hillbillies" a bad name.

Starmer is gone. Good luck UK. As if anything will change or those who allowed 250,000 girls to be raped and abused by the Pakistani Rape Gangs will ever be held to account.

Hoghopper's avatar

The next will be worse, and the next, an so on

Michelle Styles's avatar

Because it is just happened -- Starmer has resigned as British Prime Minister.

If you want to see what a heckler's veto looks like, try listening to his speech -- the police allowed a known protestor to blast his music over the historic speech. People were prevented from listening.

It looks like it will be Andy Burnham as the next PM. Wes Streeting has backed him and it will probably a coronation rather than a leadership contest.

MG's avatar

New prime minister same as the old prime minister?

Michelle Styles's avatar

Sort of, but his voice should be easier to listen to. He supposed to be better at managing people. He has been an able mayor of Manchester and has overseen a lot of regeneration -- turning a depressed city into a thriving one.

Given that Streeting has bottled it, Burnham will have a coronation. He is Catholic, grew up in the posh part of Cheshire, went to Cambridge (read Eng Lit), married his uni sweetheart who is Dutch and has pretty much been involved in politics since the days of Blair. He is supposed to be soft-Left but he is a chameleon.

Evans W's avatar

Was great news to hear about Starmer. There's a special place in hell for him.

Michelle Styles's avatar

He has been a disaster as a prime minister -- championing things like the surrender of the Chagos islands, VAT on private schools and inheritance tax were not in manifesto. He has also failed to secure the borders or put enough money in defence.

Evans W's avatar

Not only that, but he starts crying like a f*cking 5th grader as he's throwing in the towel. At least you guys still have a few men like Tommy Robinson around. Hopefully the Brits can elect someone that at lease appears to have a pair on them.

Michelle Styles's avatar

You should really look at Al Carns -- a far better politician and man than Robinson. Carns is a former SBS and Royal Marine. He could have become Chief of Staff but decided to enter politics to change Britain. He is Labour because he grew up on a rough Aberdeen council estate (think housing project) and the military was his way out. He wants National Resilience. In short he is very impressive.

will do & thank you.
