Today in The Front Page: How America blew it on EVs. The trouble with Eileen Gu. Tyler Cowen’s immigration test. Arthur Brooks explains why Gen Z is choosing OnlyFans over real relationships. And more.
Robert Duvall is largely known for later portrayals, but for this kid who was 11 years old in 1969, my favorite movie was "True Grit" and Robert Duvall will forever be Lucky Ned Pepper. My buddies and I hid in the balcony of the Orpheum Theater in Tulsa so we could see a second showing of True Grit and True Grit was all we talked about for weeks. I can still quote several parts of it from memory.
It's amazing that author failed to mention how communists highjacked the industry: demented puppet selected complete idiot as a Transportation Secretary who stole billions out of the Federal budget and produced nothing. Loonies marched against the Renaissance Man who invented the EV industry. Loonies/communists were destroying EV vehicles of the private citizens as a political intimidation. $7,500 subsidy - with 38 Trillions in debt, every USA citizen still have to pay for communists to buy Chinese cars, Defend EU from Russia, pay extremely high prices for healthcare, being unemployed, being Caucasian male, being racist, etc, etc - basically, pay for everyone and everything and die. Wonderful! What a country!
Totally disagree with you and not sure why you came to that conclusion. I think The Free Press is a testament to Bari Weiss and the rest of the writers there. If anything, CBS News is a little wobbly, but that ship will hopefully get righted soon. Bari, Nellie, Suzy, Rafaela, Tyler, all of them have contributed to the unbelievable success of the news outlet
"I would like to propose a simple metric for resolving disputes over whether immigration benefits a particular region or city. It is an imperfect standard.."
It's not about immigration; it's about legal immigration v. illegal immigration. We can have a conversation about the need for unsklled labor in a growing AI world, but that conversation should be based on legal immigration, not illegal immigration and completely dishonoring our laws - 8 U.S.C Section 1325 - which is very clear.
When an immigrant ignores our laws from the get-go, it's a slap in the face to all Americans.
I don’t want an electric vehicle. I don’t know anyone who owns an electric vehicle. I have never heard anyone say they want an electric vehicle.
Maybe, if I lived inside of a large city, I would consider it for a second vehicle, for in city transportation. However, I don’t.
As a matter of fact, I live on the Gulf Coast. We have hurricanes and occasionally must evacuate. The very last thing I want is to be stuck in a traffic jam in the summer heat evacuating from a hurricane with anything other than an internal combustion engine. I can travel hundreds of miles on a relatively small tank of fuel, and if that’s insufficient, I can refill the tank in a matter of minutes.
The loss of critical thinking. I know many who own a hybrid (less fully EV) in cities, but for much of our sprawling and car-centric country they make little sense. A brief trip anywhere in Europe reveals their popularity in countries with very high fuel prices and much shorter range requirements. But an analysis of demographic differences is beyond the scope of most journalists. Many of the points made are accurate, but point a one sided picture. And the real questions not asked revolve around the real environmental and economic costs of end of life battery pollution, costs of mining and processing components, and stunning improvements in ICE technology. Let the market decide.
The Liberals wanted electric cars but no one else. It is the same in Canada, they are not practical and the batteries are far worse for the environment than gas vehicles.
Anyone with a brain could see the battery technology was not good enough for mass use in large countries AND the electric recharging infrastructure was no where near good enough.
Worse, combine the above with the idiotic move to more expensive and less reliable alternative energies and you have yourself a very large failure.
I know many who own an electric vehicle. They always, always have a gas powered car for long trips, work or towing, emergencies, or freezing cold. If they want one, they should be able to buy one. Just like you or me should be able to buy a gas powered car if we prefer. The Federal Gov't should never have provided tax credits to encourage the adoption of any vehicle - what a waste of revenue when you are $38 T in debt. I'm not sure the astute folks at what used to be known as Dodge will survive, and the CEO of GM and Ford should be fired. If anyone blew it, surely the CEOs and GM and Ford would be in front of the line.
Don't want to read the screed about electric vehicles. No, the fault doesn't lie with Detroit's incompetence. The fault lies with Detroit's compliance with the stupidity of the federal government and the climate crazies who insisted on and MANDATED electric vehicles when we are nowhere near ready to power them. Plenty of incompetence going around, no doubt, but the gorilla in the room is the stupidity of the people who believed that electric vehicles will save the planet
One can make all kinds of excuses for the epic failure of EV’s in the US but one fact remains, the majority of American’s don’t want them. Most would rather drill in the skull of Bambi for oil to produce gas and a 10 minute “fill up” that lasts 500 miles than sit at a charging station for half an hour to drive 180 miles while searching for the next charger.
Note to the editors: just because Tyler Cowen has written something, it doesn’t mean you have to publish it. And if you’re going to push as part of the morning roundup, read the 300+ comments beforehand. You might have saved yourself the ensuing embarrassment .
I remember Robert Duvall as the recluse living next door who saved the life of a young girl in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Always a great talent and always great stories he gave us, RIP.

R.I.P. Robert "Lucky Ned Pepper" Duvall.
Great comments!

If the four cover articles of today’s issue of The Free Press are any indication, its future as a must read is in terminal decline.

The "trouble" with Eileen Gu.
Lol! Such as?
God Bless Augustus McCrae. May he rest in peace.

Nothing about the mass shooting in Rhode Island yesterday, by the man who had just trans'd into a woman?
This seems to be a huge trend worldwide, which the media is either covering up, or ignoring.
"The state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the refusal to cooperate is “concerning and unprecedented.”"
How many of you spewed coffee when you read this? Be honest!
