I would love an explanation from ground zero on why gen z is so overweight, poorly dressed and covered in tattoos. I’m a millennial so I still hold on to dated notions like trying to look attractive, healthy, and stable. I simply don’t understand why someone would desire to be off putting - let alone an entire generation.

All my AP Lang students are writing this for their first prompt of the semester. Submission to the contest is optional but many are choosing to. They will be thrilled that the deadline is extended. 😀

Somewhat dismayed with the assertions that Gen Zs or Boomers all think alike. We are individuals with wide and varied perspectives and life experiences. I don’t like being pigeonholed or having someone assume what I may be thinking. Let’s be individuals.

I'm a boomer (77) who questions the intellect of Gen Z. But reading last year's winning essays was strong evidence that there are some very intelligent and articulate young people in America. I'm anxious to read the submissions of this year's winners.

Bob, I am almost your age and share your evaluation of today’s younger generation.

I also understand the brainwashing they have experienced. My oldest grandchild is now 20. I used to take a day off each week to spend with her, as well as to take her to ‘enrichment’ or early learning classes on weekends. Watching the learning sessions and listening to her describe the world made me want to vomit. It was all about climate change scaring children to believe the planet would explode is they did not use the correct product or get electricity from wind turbines.

Esoteric subjects such as race, gender and climate have taken the time traditionally spent on literacy and thinking. Today’s graduates might have an idea of describing facts, butfail miserable at using higher order skills such as analysis and synthesis.

If I identify as Gen Z, can I still write in?

A writing contest for persons of a particular age group is fine, but your come-on is offensive.

When did it start, this placing of people in boxes? Was it marketers trying to sell something? Pollsters trying to bring order to numbers? Politicians trying to herd voters? The media love the ease of placing people in boxes. But it isn’t truthful. And then people fall into the same habit. They feel the need to think according to stereotype.

The “Zoomers” I know (and I don’t personally call them by that label) are each and every one of them an individual. What they share are the political times we are all living in.

The quote was: "A lot of people—mostly Boomers—like to say that Gen Z is doomed." It doesn't say all Boomers think alike, only that a lot of people have the stated belief, especially Boomers. I think that's true and there are times when I've felt that way. Watch a few man-on-the-street videos where young people have no idea of when World War II was or who fought in the Civil War. Pretty disheartening stuff. But fortunately that's not all young folks, many of whom are incredibly bright.

I never understood all this "Generation <whatever> is like this" stuff. It's like when you go to a Chinese restaurant and look at their zodiac and everyone born the same year as you, and also 12 years before you and 12 years after you, is the same?

I'm "Generation X" and I know people exactly my age that are hard working savers, profligate slackers, potheads, military officers, drunks, non-drinking preachy types, left wing nutjobs, 21st century pseudo psychology self analysts, Trump diehards, etc.

I bet my late WW2 veteran "greatest generation" grandfather could say the same.

Gen Z is still in high school? I have 3 Gen Z kids -- born in 2001, 2003, and 2004. Definitely have different philosophies and attitudes than my two millennial kids (1994, 1996). I'll be interested in ready the entries!
