Evan,

The Olympics are coming up and NBC’s coverage is always notoriously pedestrian.

Might I suggest you embrace this freedom from pop-girl culture to research those events that don’t get coverage in the US and bring us the worthwhile content we won’t get from the monopoly of NBC coverage? I don’t want to hear about Caitlin Clark not playing on the women’s volleyball team or whatever form of badminton she’s supposed to be so good at; I want some coverage of fencing, equestrian, judo, weightlifting, etc. Honestly, I would love to hear about the badminton tournament as long as it’s about the actual Olympics and not about Caitlyn Clerk not being there.

*No, “badminton” was not a typo.

I love films but I’ve been hiking every Saturday for several weeks now. While good films and good TV shows appear every now and then, there’s not much to watch these days. It’s worth getting outside, getting moving, and soaking in green trees and sun while it’s available. With great HDR TVs and Blu-ray no one is going to miss anything they can’t watch in a month or so.

For this summer’s entertainment, we’ll have a reprise of the summer of 2020 with progressives protesting their cause du jour, this time pushing for Israel—and Zionists (read Jews)—to be obliterated. Along with some nostalgic destroying property and intimidating passersby, they’re even going to reprise wearing those chic face masks.

Unfortunately, as with the 2020 riots, we likely won’t be entertained by police actually being allowed to do their jobs and arrest the miscreants.

The economists at Citi have been predicting a recession starting this summer. As an alternative explanation how about consumers are tapped out, they are cutting back and a major economic downturn is imminent?

Evan, I think there’s a little more here if you dig a little deeper. Perhaps the idea that most of our shared pop culture moments revolve around acts of the past - Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were popular 10-15 years ago, Barbie, Top Gun, etc. sure, you have breakthrough acts like Olivia Rodriguez but, to your point, their cultural staying power seems to be fleeting in today’s fractured cultural sphere.

It would be interesting to do a deep dive on this nostalgic angle, as I think we as a culture crave a shared understanding of the arts and the easiest way to get it is through acts and themes that were relevant in a more analog era.

I’m honestly looking forward to a flop girl summer. Can’t wait to turn off my phone/tv/headphones and spend time reading books, walking in nature, and laughing with family and friends.

It's a fine article but it doesn't strike me as fitting for TFP.
