I was born in the era of assassinations, writes Free Press columnist Caitlin Flanagan. But when I saw the news of the shooting in Washington, I barely scrolled. That’s how I know we’ve reentered an era of political violence.
"I barely scrolled... and that's how I knew..." Yikes. Barely acknowledging the third assassination attempt of our nation's president is not the flex this writer seems to think it is. By all means, get back to your dinner party!
I honestly don't find this analysis of what happened in D.C. much different from the mainstream media coverage. They all seem to forget that President Trump was the INTENDED VICTIM, not the perpetrator of this attack! I was in the 9th grade when JFK was assassinated and was in college when RFK and MLK were assassinated. All three individuals had their flaws (as we all do) but I can't remember a single news article blaming the victim for his own demise. It's unfortunate that Ms. Flanagan seemed to do that in this article. Maybe that's not what she intended, but that's how it came across in my mind. I will continue to read her future articles with an open mind, but I'll have to admit that I found this initial piece troubling from an objective standpoint.
Great score, Free Press! Caitlin brings her considerable writing skills; although I agree with Yuri that her getting moist over the good looks of the most recent assassin is in bad taste! I look forward to her FP articles.
I watched a clip of the Oscars with Johnny Carson announcing why they had put the ceremony off for the day after Ronald Reagan was shot..... the crowd was respectful and glad that Reagan was ok.... and Carson handled it with decency and a joke borrowed from Regan. But Carson, unlike modern comedy hosts refused to be political.
The president is perfectly okay with political violence if it's on his behalf. He pardoned the Jan 6th convicts ffs. Let's be honest here. Let's get real. Trump and his supporters are dragging this country down into the sewer morally, legally, medically, fiscally, culturally, economically, and militarily because, in their fever dreams, they believe that the left was way worse.
OK, Caitlin, but people should be under some suspicion, about where their sympathies lay, especially if they've had a long stint as a journalist, and, with the Atlantic no less. Faux both-sides-ism posturing is common in journalists who always want to spin the common sense out of current events, in favor of their wacky world-view. The Atlantic has been an unmistakable flag-bearer (or dupe) of the Left for countless years now, and its logical to suspect that their people, especially an Irish Catholic, purporting to have ties with Ireland, but never mentioning the burgeoning Jew-hatred there, and all that Muslim political violence there and all over Europe, especially when one's thesis is "political violence". At this point, I suspect CF will often miss the elephant in the room, on several levels. Much of the literate English-speaking public is approaching and absorbing Elon's perspectives on journalists: those people who have never designed and/or built anything, but feel supremely omniscient sitting behind their Macs, whilst pontificating. Its a large factor in why the sheer honesty and lack of spin of a very few ai apps is so refreshing.
Anybody who stayed with the Atlantic for so long after they stopped being a source of honest, thoughtful, and unbiased journalism is damaged goods. You’ve shown your bias and lack of grace on day one and your disingenuous attempt at civility is transparent. I’m sad that The FP has onboarded someone of your ilk who in their first article has brought their taint to what, until now, I considered a refreshing source of information and ideas. I’ll CONTINUE praying for America but now I’m also praying that your tenure is short lived if you continue writing this kind of tripe. It’s your first day so I’m cutting you and The FP some slack. Also, your “pray for America”manipulative rhetorical device made me want to puke.
Speaking as someone who is letting his subscription end in a few weeks (I feel the FP is corrupt, and I need to bank some money), the comments are always a source of amusement and entertainment (for a few weeks longer). If y'all hate the columnists so much, do what I did and cancel. If not, you're just narcisists who think people care what you think and like the reactions to your posts--carry on! And fuck off.
WOW! Caitlyn Flanagan comes from the Atlantic Magazine to The Free Press and it's a big deal?! Sorry, not even a little impressed. Ms. Flanagan is whole biased and intellectually compromised pseudo journalist. Go hang with your Hollywood elites and smug group of "Beautiful People." (BTW, the way you chose to react to the THIRD attempted assassination President Trump is direct reflection of YOUR values and unpbringing. I'm 72 and lived all those events and experiences without becoming jaded.)
Thank you Ms. Flanagan . You mentioned near your closing “The moment shimmered in the air. Donald Trump has called journalists “nasty,” “stupid,” “terrible,” “enemies of the people,” and many other vile things.”
All true Ms. Flanagan …. All true indeed. In fact considering what the media and their acolytes in American Society have done to our great President. I would call President Trump extremely gracious !
Finally it’s not America Ms. Flanagan . It’s the Democrats. Say it Ms. Flanagan IT’S
THE DEMOCRAT’s RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HATRED AND VIOLENCE! Say it loud and say it clear Ms. Flanagan.
Obviously Flanagan has a long, ingrained bias against President Trump. She seems to ignore the press conspiring with and supporting the Democrats to Impeach the president based on fabricated issues and other lies; and a host of other efforts to undermine his presidency. She forgets about the press covering for a severely compromised President Biden and aiding him in his run for the presidency. She should have just come out and said that she was writing a glorification of the press and a hit piece on Trump; rather than hiding it in a self-agonizing history lesson. By the way, the three civil rights workers do have names, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner. Why did she omit them? Flanagan may have been a mentor and friend, but this first article by her is flawed and lacking transparency and honesty.

I was four when JFK was killed. Sadly it was one of my earliest childhood memories.
In less than 75 years, we’ve gone from watching these atrocities on TV to becoming desensitized to them.

Nope, just nope.
Welcome aboard Caitlin Flanagan. Stormy seas.

Biden pardoned the Dem J6 Investigation Committee.
And?
And he also pardoned his sister and brother AND their spouses for any and all crimes back to 2014.
If only you held Trump to that standard.

Gratuitous anti-Trump remarks. Quoi de neuf?
