If you have dated a good many people but haven’t felt much of a spark with anybody, the answer might be to stop looking for your cultural twin, writes Arthur Brooks.
I feel like I’m not learning much from this column. Much of it is just common knowledge and common sense. The writing is a bit boring. Some of the jokes are funny - “short of sniffing one another like dogs” - but most aren’t. Hope the column improves. Happy Valentines Day!
As I remember, the 1995 shirt-sniffing test did not hold up to replication by other researchers, and the methodology was flawed: small sample sizes, metrics so loose that they could have chosen which outcomes they were "looking for" after they saw the data. I truly enjoy Arthur's prose, values, and sentiments, but the "science" he presents requires critical analysis!
Oh yes. I fell in love with a foreigner and because I wouldn’t move to Poland. He moved here.
He spoke flawless English, and Russian as well. When my mind was heavy with jet lag during Christmases in Warsaw, I could drift off to sleep on his father‘s couch, listening to the men arguing in Polish. It was blissful. Yes. It was a blissful time.
Arthur, I love the bus watercolor almost as much as the photo of your grandson licking your office window while waiting to wrestle! Keep em coming!

I miss mine too.
What a beautiful painting! Your dad died far too young. May he rest in peace.

Love your father. A good man.

Musician, artist, scientist…you are truly a Renaissance man. 😊
Arthur Brooks is a great addition to The Free Press! His writing is great. Topics are so human!
