Hi everyone. I'm Lynne, and I live in New Hampton, NH. I had just finished page 287 of "East of Eden" when I saw the FP invitation to the new book club. I figured this was a sign that I was meant to join, so here I am. I'm a lifelong reader and have been a member of book clubs in the past, but since moving to a more rural environment several years ago, I have lapsed on my connection to the literary world. This essay triggered my confirmation bias. I have often wondered why we refer to Americans of the Jewish faith Jews...are we not all Americans first as the author points out? Are the rest of Americans referred to by their religious faith or lack thereof? Doing so is un-American as it is counter to the American zeitgeist. Don't want to be American?
